A social security number or tax ID number is required to designate a beneficiary. If the designated beneficiary does not have a social security number, the employee’s social security number may be used to complete the online enrollment process.

An employee should select a beneficiary for life insurance. A beneficiary can be an individual, charity, trustee, or estate. If there is no beneficiary on record, life insurance benefits are paid to the Estate of the deceased.

An employee may designate a beneficiary who lives outside of the U.S. The employee must use their own social security number to complete the online beneficiary designation. The employee must also notify their campus benefits coordinator.
