About CUNY Tech Prep
CUNY Tech Prep is a year-long training program that provides exceptional upper-level CUNY Computer Science students training in fullstack, web development paired with 1:1 and group career coaching. Run through CUNY Institute for Software Design and Development, in collaboration with the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline, our 2019-2020 program equips 120+ students with in-demand technical and professional skills and connections to paid internships and jobs.
Over the past 4 years, CTP has grown in size and impact. As a result, we are now developing multiple tracks of study for students, the first being a Data Science pilot course in Spring 2020.
Job Description:
CTP is hiring a part time, Data Science Instructor. The Instructor will modify and teach an already developed curriculum, built around small teams of students developing open source data science applications in Python.
Other Duties
Core Responsibilities:
- Modify, as needed, a 16-week (1-semester) project-based curriculum on Data Science and Machine Learning in Python. The curriculum will include pre-work over the summer and variations in curricula to accommodate less-experienced CS students, in addition to:
- High-level topics: Data Collection and Processing, Statistical Modeling, Data Visualization, Machine Learning Techniques, Data Science Process and Big Data
- Project-Based Work: students will form teams and propose and implement a project based on topics covered in class and on open source datasets
- All lessons should have a hands-on programming or design component; students will have laptops in class
- Lecture one day a week to one section of ~25 students. Classes are held on weekday evenings from 6:30pm-9pm, based on student availability.
- Hold in-person and virtual office hours every week for 2 hours
- Oversee one Lab Instructor by checking in with them at least weekly to confirm student status/progress and troubleshoot student challenges
- Track students’ advancement through the data science curriculum by creating skill-building assessments, gathering information from Instructors and Lab Instructors, and providing additional teaching resources as needed
- Escalate concerns about student progress and program needs to Lead Instructor and Program Director in a timely manner
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of individual students’ technical competencies in a way that is readily available to program and TTP staff and communicate it to interested employers or industry partners at our biannual Demo Nights as appropriate
- Work with CTP staff to recruit, assess, and interview applicants for 2020-2021 program
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Strong command of Python, especially for Data Science and Machine Learning applications
- Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL, Pandas, Jupyter Notebooks, Numpy
- Familiarity with Scikit-learn, Pytorch and/or Tensor Flow
- Strong proficiency in Data Structures and Algorithms in Java, or C++, or Python
- Experience teaching computer science and creating related curricula
- Experience working in the NYC tech sector and knowledge of current employer demands for entry-level and new-grad software engineers and developers
- Passion for working with students from diverse backgrounds and for training the next generation of NYC’s top computer scientists
- Strong writing and communication skills, and ability to tailor communications to a variety of audiences
- A can-do mentality and willingness to take on additional responsibilities and tasks to continually improve the program
- Proven integrity when handling sensitive student circumstances and information
- Ability to maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate student schedules and evening programming
Requirements:
- Minimum of BS/MS in Computer Science/Data Science
- 3+ year professional data science or software engineering experience, specifically in a role related to data science, machine learning, or data engineering
- Strong analytical skills and knowledge of statistics, probability, and ML libraries and tools
- Strong writing skills, paired with prior experience working in a classroom setting, to guide curriculum writing and formatting
- Previous curriculum writing experience preferred
- Previous teaching experience preferred
- Excitement to help contribute to CTP and our students’ growth as software engineers
Part Time: 15-19 hours per week
$42.50/hour
