General Description:

 The Division of Engineering of the City University of New York’s Department of Design, Construction and Management provides engineering and architectural services for all capital projects managed by the University (CUNY), New York Dormitory Authority (DASNY), and New York State Power Authority (NYPA). This includes: 
 

  • Review of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil, structural, environmental, and architectural design documents (drawings, specifications, etc.) prepared by the design consultants for major renovation, infrastructure replacement, retro commissioning, and energy performance projects.
  • Managing the design and construction of fire alarm, commissioning and retro-commissioning projects.
  • Quality control and file inspections for all capital projects.  
  • Troubleshooting the heating, cooling, control, plumbing, and electrical systems for the existing installation for all campuses.
  • Managing the engineering, environmental, and special inspection requirement contracts.
  • Managing the Local Law 11 and Public Assembly Projects.
  • Managing all CUNY violations.

Other Duties:

The responsibilities for the Mechanical Engineer for the Engineering Division are:

  • Provide management and oversight for executing HVAC, mechanical and plumbing engineering design.
  • Review of consultant design documents for accuracy, code compliance, constructability, and functionality.
  • Monitor the progress of HVAC, mechanical and plumbing design projects.
  • Review and approve consultant design documents.
  • Evaluate consultant performance.
  • As required, prepare guidelines and procedures for projects in conformance with the applicable codes and regulations including ASHRAE Standards, NYS Executive orders, State and City Energy Codes.      
  • Prepare in-house design documents.
  • Coordinate with other engineering and architectural disciplines, and prepare management reports as required by Director of Engineering.
  • Prepare HVAC/Mechanical/Plumbing standards, guidelines, and specifications.
  • Perform cost estimate for projects.
  • Review shop drawings, submissions, and change orders.
  • Represent the Director of Engineering in conferences and meetings in his absence.
  • Perform quality assurance site visits during construction phase and prepare report.

Qualifications

 
Core Competencies/Qualifications:

  •  Minimum 5 years of experience in HVAC and HVAC design of new and existing buildings as well as in HVAC control systems.
  • The candidate must have good experience in design of HVAC and HVAC control systems for laboratories, science research facilities, commercial and residential buildings.
  • The candidate must have familiarity with sustainable building design and construction, and have familiarity with LEED building rating system for commercial and residential buildings.
  • Ability to perform analysis and design of HVAC, mechanical and plumbing systems as well as the supervision of the mechanical engineering consultants.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and keep the project cost within the budget.
  • Ability to troubleshoot HVAC and plumbing systems.      
  • Experience with Computer Aided Design; proficiency with Microsoft Office software is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • The candidate must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • An approved professional license (P.E.) in the State of New York is preferred.
