GENERAL DESCRIPTION  

 The City University of New York's Office of K-16 Initiatives is seeking a FutureReady NYC Program Director to provide strategic oversight and leadership to K16’s involvement with the NYC Department of Education’s  (NYC DOE) FutureReady NYC initiative (FRNYC). CUNY’s Office of K-16 Initiatives creates innovative pathways for young New Yorkers to envision and achieve academic and career success by engaging strategic partners in confronting systemic educational inequities. 

 Through FRNYC, CUNY campuses will partner with selected high schools who are working to develop labor market-aligned career-connected pathways to provide a headstart to help students develop competency in 21st century skills, gain career-connected coursework, work experience, early college credit, and/or an industry valued credential to prepare them for rewarding high growth careers. A career-connected pathway is an educational program in a school - a sequence of connected academic and elective classes, work-based learning, early postsecondary credit and credentials, and advising experiences - that helps students make clear connections to college and career opportunities. As the higher education partner, CUNY works in collaboration with a community of school leaders, educators, students/families, CBOs, and employer partners to support FutureReadyNYC pilot schools to launch, learn from, and iterate on implementing model career and college pathways. The promise of career-connected learning is that students graduate with academic excellence integrated with real-world skills and experience, a head start on college and career, and a strong plan toward a path to a rewarding career and long-term economic security.    

This position requires a motivated team player with the ability to deliver a high level of support to high school and CUNYcampuses, to work through barriers/challenges to designing high quality, student-centered pathway programs. as well, as possess the ability to prioritize effectively, manage multiple projects simultaneously with high levels of accuracy, proactively solve problems, as well as achieve goals within or ahead of established time frames.  The individual that fills this position will join at the near-start of this initiative and will have a key role in building a learning community of FutureReadyNYC schools and partnered CUNY campuses that will develop, sustain and build momentum to eventually grow to more than one hundred FutureReadyNYC high school based programs. The FRNYC Director will seek to ensure equitable access to high quality career connected learning, focused in high growth, high wage sectors starting in health care, technology, business & finance, and education in the coming years.

OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Reporting to the Assistant Dean, the FutureReadyNYC Program Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

 

Partnerships and Relationship Building 

  • Primarily seeks to broker, develop and maintain high-level relationships between NYCDOE schools and CUNY campuses in service of NYCDOE students across early college credit experiences.  
  • Work in partnership with CUNY’s K16 College Now Director, the CUNY Explorers Director, and other K16 staff heading up related or complementary initiatives which will be accessed through the FRNYC offerings.  
  • Oversee and maintain strong relationships with high schools, community-based groups, consultants, funders, industry partners, and other partner organizations across New York City to support the delivery and expansion of the FRNYC initiatives.  
  • Develop and implement services and procedures, including training materials, for the purpose of managing expectations and fostering communication among partners.  
  • Collaborate closely with other K-16 programs, CUNY Admissions, and CUNY Research Evaluation and Program Support (REPS) to coordinate program events, professional development, and reporting on outcomes and success.  
  • Ensure promotion, recruitment, articulation guides, educational and outreach materials are designed and distributed to necessary partners. 

 

Strategic Planning and Leadership 

  • Supports DOE appointed industry consultants/partners to recruit and engage private sector businesses and public sector organizations to provide work-based learning (WBL) experiences in FRNYC schools. 
  • Works to develop and implement a communication system that builds awareness of career pathways within CUNY and high schools.  Provides regular updates regarding FRNYC activities and programs to partners, funders, and other CUNY departments to ensure system alignment and equitable access across the regions.  
  • Advocate to ensure that NYC students in designated schools are provided equitable access to CUNY classes, workshops, and experiences (i.e. career awareness and exploration, campus tours preparation, career exploration events) implemented as part of FRNYC.  
  • Oversee and manage a professional learning community for CUNY campus and partner organization staff to effectively engage, cultivate, and provide opportunities for knowledge-sharing. 
  • Collaborate, advocate and disseminate university policy information to stakeholders. 
  • Coordinate and oversee the data strategy for college access and success in student-level data sharing between community-based organizations, CUNY campuses, and CUNY Central Office. 

 

Program Management 

  • Co-manage team of FRNYC Campus Liaisons who work in the field to bridge CUNY and NYCDOE high schools participating in FRNYC.  
  • Lead and support program staff in developing and executing all aspects of programming, protocols, and practices; ensuring an eye towards incorporating anti-racism into all program areas.  Provide direct technical assistance to CUNY staff, high school staff, and students to support the development and implementation of classes and experiences aligned to industry specific college and career pathways. 
  • Facilitate the development of a clearly articulated K-16 guided pathway system aligned to high-growth, high-demand jobs and careers in the region. 
  • Seek to find ways to ensure CUNY programs are accessed equitably with a focus on underserved and underrepresented student populations. 
  • Oversee program budget, write grant proposals and reports 
  • Execute and scale data projects with CUNY Registrar and CUNY Research Evaluation and Program Support (REPs); creating protocols and mechanisms to share data, including but not limited to student progress and performance 
  • Plan and coordinate FutureReadyNYC professional development, including career and college pathways workshops, conference presentations, and technology training for CUNY staff, and related partners. 
  • Develop and maintain necessary articulation agreements and ensure curriculum alignment. 
  • Maintain, modify and develop relevant data tracking protocols, including the development of data recording and reporting systems in line with DOE and CUNY technical protocols.  

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS 

 

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Undergraduate degree in related field required; Master’s degree preferred.  
  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience working in social services, K-16education, higher education, employment & workforce development, or related areas; eight years preferred. Experience should have a focus on workforce development, economic/community development, or any combination thereof, with tangible knowledge in developing, designing, or teaching in college and/or career pathway systems. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise of issues related to young people from groups underrepresented in higher education. 
  • Proven strategic thinking, project planning, and management skills that combine thinking about big ideas with attention to detail 
  • Supervisory experience of direct reports, monitoring progress, providing coaching and feedback 
  • Experience working collaboratively and cooperatively with a diverse community of staff, partners, and external constituents. Experience working with young people from a variety of cultural, socio-economic, ability, and linguistic groups. 
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and a high level of creative problem solving 
  • Digitally literate and proficient with fluency in Microsoft suite, in various database or information-management systems, proficiency in Google and of programs & otherwise  
  • Able to think creatively and strategically to overcome barriers, or proven agility and endurance in managing within a large and complex organization and partnership. Highly organized, attentive to detail, responsible, and flexible: able to maintain responsibility for multiple tasks in the context of a diverse, fast-paced work environment, and maintain composure under pressure. 

 

Physical Demands and Environment Requirements 

  • This position is located in a professional office environment and is currently hybrid, working 70% in person (7 days) in the office and 30% remote (3 days) during every two-week payroll cycle. A laptop may be provided if needed to support working remotely.  

 

As of May 27, 2022, all candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment.
