Through its partnership with the City of New York, CUNY’s Building Performance Laboratory is hiring qualified energy management professionals to serve as on-site consultants and fill critical staffing capacity needs at the Department of Citywide Administrative Services’ (“DCAS”) Division of Energy Management (“DEM”). For background, DEM serves as the hub for energy management for City government operations. DEM develops the City’s annual Heat, Light, and Power Budget; manages the City’s electricity, natural gas, and steam accounts; helps their agency partners identify and pursue energy-saving opportunities; does energy efficiency and clean power generation projects across the City’s portfolio; and implements operations and maintenance best practices. Specifically, DEM is tasked with leading the City’s efforts to reduce emissions from City government operations 40 percent by 2025, 50 percent by 2030, and 80 percent by 2050 from baseline. For this specific role, on behalf of DEM, CUNY BPL seeks an Associate Energy Engineer to serve within DEM’s Technical Services Team (“TST”), which sits within the Operations Unit. Under the direction of the TST Director and Deputy Director, the Associate Energy Engineer will manage, and review energy efficiency reports and help implement resulting measures for City-owned buildings in compliance with Local Law 87 of 2009, as well as contribute to other strategic initiatives. The position requires energy efficiency knowledge, project management experience, and the ability to think strategically and make recommendations. 

 

Other Duties

Under this assignment, the person’s responsibilities may include the following:

  • Managing energy audit execution with external consultants.
  • Reviewing and providing guidance related to audit recommendations
  • Helping manage retro-commissioning projects.
  • Leading efforts to refine and implement a Measurement and Verification (“M&V”) strategy to assess the efficacy and improve the performance of DEM’s energy programs.
  • Helping develop an audit and retrofit program for small and mid-size buildings.
  • Providing engineering support and technical assistance to other TST members and DEM program teams.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring the following skills and experience to this position:

  • Bachelor of science in mechanical engineering, with a major emphasis on HVAC operations.
  • At least three years of experience in analyzing HVAC equipment operations and specifying equipment upgrades to improve system energy performance.
  • Knowledge of and experience in using ASHRAE Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Audits and Retro-commissioning.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) credential.
  • Familiarity with boiler and chiller operations and maintenance; HVAC controls; computerized building automation and energy management systems; variable air volume (VAV) distribution systems; steam and chilled water system optimization methods; and overall heating and cooling system performance.
  • Familiarity with Local Law 87 (2009) – Energy Audit and Retro-Commissioning.
  • Familiarity with issues pertaining to energy efficiency in existing buildings.
  • Familiarity with energy cost, savings and greenhouse gas calculation methodology.
  • Strong analytical abilities and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft applications (Advanced Excel skills a must).
