The Office K-16 Initiatives at The City University of New York (CUNY) creates innovative pathways for young New Yorkers to envision and achieve success by engaging strategic partners in confronting systemic educational inequities.
CUNY K-16 and Con Edison have joined efforts to increase knowledge and understanding of gas safety issues among all New Yorkers by creating the Gas Safety Squad. Educating the public about gas safety begins by reaching school-aged children and their families. By pushing into middle school science classrooms across the city, CUNY will train New York City students on gas safety issues, serving approximately 10,000 students over three and a half years.
Job description:
CUNY K-16 Initiatives is looking for undergraduate and graduate students in teacher education and/or STEM fields of study to teach lessons on natural gas and gas safety to middle school students. Instructors will be trained in the curriculum and then implement a 45-minute remote lesson to middle school students. Instructors will be responsible for additional planning and administrative tasks related to the work.

Eligibility:
- Must commit to working with the program from October 2020 through June 2021 (following DOE schedule of recess) and have some availability during the weekday between the hours of 8AM and 3PM, when middle schools are in session;
- Must have a minimum of 2.5 GPA and have at least 12 credits in science or education courses,
- Should feel comfortable leading workshops remotely;
- Must have the necessary equipment to give workshops remotely (computer, Wi-Fi, etc.);
- Experience with middle school students a plus.
Compensation:
$20/hour. We ask students to commit to working during the times mentioned above (includes training, planning, and teaching time) and can schedule those hours around your course load. You may average anywhere from two to ten hours per week, depending on your availability. This is a Research Foundation funded position.
