General Description

Post-doctoral Research Scientist or Masters Research Assistant position available in the Meléndez laboratory, at Queens College to study the role of autophagy in development and aging. Research will employ the model system of C. elegans. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop and apply molecular, genetic, and imaging tools to study mechanisms that involve autophagy and/or microautophagy in C. elegans development.

We are looking for an individual with a Masters (MS) or doctoral degree (PhD) who seeks full-time employment and enjoys the excitement of a high-leveled scientific laboratory and welcomes the challenge of an energetic environment that maintains a strong commitment to collegiality and teaching. The Research Scientist will perform independent research requiring excellent application of professional judgment, interpretation of experimental results, innovation of new approaches, and preparation of research for presentation and publication. The individual must have solid experience with contemporary cell and molecular biology techniques. Experience in CRISPR-Cas9 technology and C. elegans genetics is a plus. The candidate should be highly motivated, very enthusiastic about science, learn quickly, think creatively and independently, and work efficiently. PhD students and Masters students finishing studies are also encouraged to apply. Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor, including (but not limited to):

  • Manages their own project, which should lead to a first author publication.
  • Develops expertise in transformative molecular tools for the analysis of their function in  elegans development.
  • Assisting with lab management, organization, equipment maintenance, and maintaining a safe work environment Develops proficiency in career skills, including writing, public speaking, networking, and critical evaluation of scientific literature.
  • Designs research experiments. Evaluates research findings and reports results.
  • Maintains conscientious discharge of their research responsibilities.
  • Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
  • Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice, including the maintenance of adequate research records.
  • Engages in open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to the laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
  • Maintains collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
  • Adheres to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.

 

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated and creative candidate to join us in this unique project. We would like you to bring:

  • An MA or PhD degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Biomedical Sciences or a related field;
  • high affinity for molecular biology;
  • previous experience with independent research, and preferably with genetic model organisms and advanced microscopy;
  • training in scientific writing, communication and presentation in English;
  • motivation to work on a challenging project in a multidisciplinary and international research team.
