Description:

CUNY SPS seeks Front End Engineer who will work on a Benefits Access Project, sponsored by the Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity (NYC Opportunity). NYC Opportunity leads the City’s benefit access work through its coordination of the NYC Benefits Committee, managing key products including ACCESS NYC, the NYC Benefits Platform, and piloting new tools such as My File NYC. Its products connect over 3 million New Yorkers to vital programs and services annually and progress how the City can use technology to more quickly and efficiently provision services and improve resident experience.

The Front End Engineer will work closely with NYC Opportunity’s Product Team, which centers the needs of New Yorkers, and works alongside city agencies and partners to use technology to improve service delivery. This work includes:

  • Products to improve the lives of low-income New Yorkers by connecting them to clear actionable information on benefits, programs, services, and employment that can help them attain economic opportunity.
  • Make the City’s equity, poverty and workforce data more transparent and actionable so that policy makers can use it to make informed decisions, researchers have creditable data, and the public can better understand it.
  • Design and pilot new tools to improve social service delivery to accelerate the research, design, build, implementation, and evaluation of digital tools and services for New Yorkers.
  • Support open source and scalable technologies so the City and other civic technologists can build upon what works and accelerate their ability to serve New Yorkers.
  • Inspire and shape how the City of New York uses modern, agile and user-centric approaches to build technology products.

Other Duties

The Front End Engineer will:

  • Build the frontends of applications using modern libraries and integrate them with different types of backends, including serverless backends.
  • Build reusable components that can be used across applications.
  • Design and implement test cases for all new front end components.
  • Work closely with designers and product managers to interpret and implement user stories and designs to build modern and responsive UI.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, diagrams, and other assets for engineers to pick up and continue to iterate on the code.
  • Ensure the application is in compliance with NYC’s security and accessibility standards.
  • Maintain and publish open-source code, collaborate with other engineers, and broadly support advising on technical roadmap and additional use cases.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Strong proficiency in js, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS3
  • Working knowledge of the front-end front-end build tools, including Yarn and NPM
  • Knowledge of modern authorization mechanisms, such as JSON Web Tokens and Single Sign On (SSO)
  • Understanding of backend architecture, server-side logic, RESTful APIs, and databases
  • Experience working with mainstream cloud platforms, specifically Amazon Web Services and Azure DevOps
  • Comfort or understanding of agile development methodologies
  • Experience building applications that consume REST APIs
  • Experience integrating external services such as NYCID, Carto or Twilio
  • Knowledge of secure front-end development practices and ability to interpret and implement data protection and security protocols
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) is a nonprofit educational corporation founded in 1963 to provide post-award fiscal and administrative support for CUNY’s research and sponsored programs.
