We are hiring a Health Education Research Coordinator to facilitate both a socialization and sex education curriculum and a physical and nutrition curriculum for young people aged 16-27 with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The facilitation will take place remotely over Zoom. The facilitation is part of a randomized control trial to evaluate the efficacy of these curricula. The job will also include related research aspects such as recruitment, administering consent, and data reporting. The position may include occasional travel and in-person work for recruitment and meetings. You will be part of a collaborative team of 2-3 other Health Educator Research Coordinators.

Details: The CUNY Institute for Implementation Science in Population Health (ISPH) is recruiting for a Health Education Research Coordinator for a 5-year NIH-funded randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a socialization and sex education program among individuals with mild to moderate intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), under the direction of co-Principal Investigators Suzanne McDermott and Heidi Jones, faculty at the CUNY School of Public Health.
The randomized controlled trial (RCT) will test a socialization and sex education curriculum among 856 adolescents and young adults (ages 16-27) with Down syndrome and other types of mild/moderate I/DD. Half of the participants will be randomized to receive a socialization and sex education curriculum, and the other half a physical exercise and nutrition intervention. The Health Education Research Coordinator will facilitate interventions in 7-week cycles.
This position involves: (1) recruitment and informed consent of adolescents and young adults, ages 16-27 years, who agree to participate in the study and to be randomly assigned to a reproductive health intervention or a healthy living intervention, and (2) providing the delivery of the health education interventions. The intervention will be conducted remotely, but some within state travel may be required for recruitment. The schedule may vary and will include some evening hours and some weekend days.
The Health Education Research Coordinator will have a caseload of approximately 16 individuals for weekly Zoom one-on-one meetings and 2 groups of approximately 8 individuals for weekly Zoom group sessions during each 7-week cycle. The intervention phase will last approximately two and a half years, and each Health Educator Research Coordinator will work with up to 300 individuals over the course of the intervention phase.
The Health Educator Research Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the study for participants on their caseload and will be supervised by the Project Manager and the Co-Principal Investigators, through weekly remote meetings. The job involves facilitating health curricula remotely. Required tech (cell phone and tablet or laptop) will be provided. The applicant must have access to a quiet, private space with strong Wi-Fi.
Health Educator Research Coordinator duties include:
- Recruitment of study participants through outreach to service providers and community organizations
- Administration of informed consent/assent to participants
- Communicating assignment to the individual or group intervention to participants based on randomization scheme and scheduling appointments
- After receiving training on the interventions, implementing the health education curricula
- Maintaining accurate session completion records, and data entry
- Working with self-advocates/lived experience consultants to identify solutions to challenges that arise
- Completing progress reports
Other Duties
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- At least one year of experience working with adolescents or adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) or other experience with someone living with a disability
- People with disabilities are encouraged to apply
- Knowledge and comfortability with discussing sexuality and sexual health
- Comfortable with conducting virtual small group exercise and nutrition classes
- Ability to adapt instruction to make sessions accessible and understandable
- Evidence of collaboration with colleagues
- Experience with remote facilitation is a plus
- At least a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS)
