General Description

Our four-week summer program for high school students offers a stimulating and enriching environment where students can develop new skills, build confidence, and engage in academic and creative pursuits. As part of the enrichment curriculum, chess serves as a powerful tool to strengthen critical thinking, strategic planning, and concentration.

We are seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Chess Teacher to lead daily chess instruction and activities. The ideal candidate has a passion for the game and enjoys teaching high school students of varying skill levels. Through lessons, interactive play, and structured tournaments, the Chess Teacher will help students sharpen their cognitive skills while having fun in a supportive and inclusive setting.

  • Develop and deliver engaging chess lessons appropriate for beginner to intermediate players
  • Teach core concepts such as rules, tactics, openings, endgames, and strategic thinking
  • Facilitate practice games, group activities, puzzles, and analysis sessions
  • Organize and oversee friendly in-program tournaments or competitions
  • Encourage sportsmanship, patience, and respect among players
  • Provide individual support to students who need extra help or challenge
  • Maintain a positive, focused, and collaborative classroom environment
  • Other duties as assigned

Other Duties

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of chess theory and strategy
  • Experience teaching or coaching chess, preferably with high school students
  • Ability to explain complex ideas in a simple, clear, and engaging way
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills
  • Passion for working with youth and fostering intellectual growth
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree or teaching/coaching certification preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with at-risk students
  • Experience using online chess tools or platforms (e.g., Chess.com, Lichess)
  • Familiarity with educational technology and visual aids to support instruction
