About the Organization: The Bronx Institute Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a grant funded initiative by the United States Department of Education. It is designed to foster academic success and increase students’ performance. The Bronx Institute at Lehman College has provided federal

GEAR UP Programs to middle and high schools since its inception in 1999. The Institute works collaboratively with Bronx schools, organizations, colleges and other service providers in the planning, promotion, and delivery of innovative programs and services to accelerate academic achievement, improve student performance and ensure successful high school graduation, admission to college and or workforce readiness. 

Other Duties

  • Advisement: ACRC works with large and small groups of students at the school site scheduling, planning and delivering workshops, student services and programs for middle and high school students currently in the 8th and 9th grades, including academic planning, preparation for high school, career exploration, Saturday programs, summer enrichment activities and orientation events in our partner schools.
  • Student Recruitment: The ACRC actively engages and recruits’ students to attend GEAR UP academic activities during the school year, school recesses and multi- week summer institute.
  • Parental Engagement: The ACRC establishes a high level of engagement with participants’ parents and/or guardians through electronic communication, participation in school-wide events and Bronx Institute sponsored events.  
  • Data Collection: The ACRC is responsible for accurate, detailed and timely submission of student activities from workshops, sponsored events, GEAR UP programs and partnership programs.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Education, academic counseling or a closely related field
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational skills
  • Ability to plan, organize, and deliver workshops
  • Experience in college preparation or academic coaching (a plus)
  • Able to balance multiple tasks and projects and shift priorities as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member across different tasks and projects
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as necessary
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

These functions include legal assessment and signing of agreements where RFCUNY is named as a fiscal agent; setting up award accounts; preparing sub-awards and assisting PIs in monitoring the work of the recipients of sub-awards; supporting project directors with hiring and managing research project and sponsored program staff; supporting the purchasing and paying for goods and services with grant and program funds; managing financial aspects of projects including accounts receivable, financial reporting, invoicing, budget monitoring, and cost compliance with uniform guidance; ensuring that sponsor financial requirements are met; monitoring compliance with applicable project and financial management rules and laws; supporting the management of independent and external audits and financial reviews; and providing data, information, management expertise, and other supports to CUNY’s research and sponsored programs.
