Program Overview

PowerUp2030 is a 10-week intensive training program led by LaGuardia Community College's Business Services, in collaboration with the New York Power Authority (NYPA). The program equips established business owners in civil engineering, electrical contracting, construction, and related fields with the technical knowledge, regulatory understanding, and procurement skills needed to enter the clean energy sector. Participants will gain expertise in renewable energy technologies, industry regulations, and NYPA’s procurement process, preparing them to compete for renewable energy contracts.

Role Description

This is a grant-funded, hybrid part-time position through the Research Foundation of CUNY. Appointments are subject to availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Facilitators will deliver specific training modules based on their expertise, helping participants apply their existing industry knowledge to the renewable energy sector. Reporting to the Program Director and working closely with the Program Manager, Curriculum Developer, Renewable Energy Growth Advisors, and industry partners, facilitators will lead instructional sessions (2.5 hours) using structured curriculum, lesson plans, and instructional materials. The ideal candidate will have deep subject matter expertise, practical industry experience, and the ability to engage diverse learners effectively.

LaGuardia Community College

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.

Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond – in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020).

Instruction

  • Teach assigned modules within the program, ensuring content is delivered in an engaging and accessible manner
  • Utilize a variety of instructional methods, including case studies, group discussions, and hands-on exercises
  • Ensure participants can apply course concepts to real-world renewable energy projects
  • Provide industry insights and practical applications to reinforce learning outcomes
  • Foster an inclusive and interactive learning environment that encourages participation and knowledge retention

Curriculum Implementation

  • Deliver content aligned with the program’s structured curriculum
  • Provide feedback on curriculum effectiveness and suggest improvements
  • Collaborate with the Curriculum Developer to incorporate industry best practices and ensure instructional alignment with learning objectives

Participant Engagement and Support

  • Engage with program participants to address questions and reinforce key learning points
  • Support classroom discussions and activities to enhance participant understanding
  • Work with the Program Manager and Renewable Energy Growth Advisors to track participant progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Renewable Energy, Civil Engineering, Electrical Contracting, Construction, Business, Environmental Science, Education, or a related field
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of teaching or training experience in a relevant field
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: renewable energy, project development, safety, financial management, or procurement
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly
  • Understanding of adult learning principles and effective instructional design
  • Proficiency in instructional technology, including learning management systems and online conferencing tools
