General Description

The Senior Research Associate to the President supports the president of LaGuardia Community College by leading special research and planning initiatives that advance the mission of the colleg and are designed to increase student success, community engagement, and institutional effectiveness. Projects may include, for example:

  • securing industry expertise to inform academic programs
  • conducting surveys and research on student outcomes
  • program development
  • collaborations with businesses and community-based organizations to produce internship and job opportunities for students
  • strategic planning
  • program analysis
  • leveraging the college’s unique assets in service to Queens and NYC
  • research to identify funding opportunities and other resources to support student success

The position is ideal for a highly-motivated, well-organized, self-starter who is passionate about the mission of LaGuardia Community College. He/she/they should be able work closely with the president, but also be highly effective when working independently. The Senior Research Associate also works with other college administrators, faculty, staff, and students as needed. The position requires excellent research, analytical, and writing skills. The president is looking for a Senior Research Associate for Summer 2023. A full-time commitment of at least six weeks is preferred. Start and end dates are flexible. Salary commensurate with experience. LaGuardia Community College
Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY. LaGuardia’s nine academic departments offer more than 50 associate degree and certificate programs. Major areas of study include Health Sciences, STEM, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts. Upon graduation most students transfer to senior colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their Baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. In 2021, LaGuardia served over 26,000 students in pre-college, associate degree, and continuing education programs. Consistent with the diversity of Queens, 52 percent of LaGuardia students are born outside of the United States. They come from 133 countries and speak 62 heritage languages. More than half (54 percent) are first-generation college students. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (88 percent), 58 percent are women, 33 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-seven percent of LaGuardia students are Hispanic, almost double the threshold of 25 percent required by the US Department of Education for designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Ninety-nine percent of LaGuardia students receive some form of financial aid, including COVID-related aid. Half of LaGuardia students attend part-time, often because they need to work to support their families.

About the Research Foundation

The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) was established as a not-for-profit educational corporation chartered by the State of New York in 1963. RFCUNY supports CUNY faculty and staff in identifying and obtaining external support (pre-award) from government and private sponsors and is responsible for the administration of all such funded programs (post-award).

RFCUNY stands between CUNY’s principal investigators (PIs) and the sponsors who support them and strives to fulfill its essential responsibilities to both groups.
