General Description
The Mental Health Service Corps (MHSC) is one of the largest initiatives in Thrive NYC: A Mental Health Roadmap for All. Thrive NYC is the first comprehensive citywide plan of action to promote and protect the mental well-being of all New Yorkers. The primary purpose of the MHSC is to increase access to mental health services for communities in need. This ambitious program places early career clinicians in primary care, substance use, and mental health settings citywide to deliver behavioral health care in high need communities while at the same time obtaining the clinical experience and supervision needed to proceed towards clinical licensure. Corps clinicians will be trained to deliver evidence based treatment and mental health promotion practices in a variety of clinical settings.
Collaborative Care is a patient-centered team-based approach to management of depression and other mental health concerns in primary care. It is an evidence-based model of care that uses systematic monitoring of symptoms and a stepped care approach to treatment. The MHSC is seeking a Consulting Psychiatrist (Geriatric} who has experience working with people over 65 years old (older adults) to help address the gaps in expertise in the public mental health system for serving this population. The geriatric psychiatrist will be part of a number of initiatives in NYC such as the Geriatric Mental Health Initiative of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which serves a homebound population with mental illness. There will also be opportunities to work with other city agencies on programs that focus on the older adult population in Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC’s).
Other Duties
The psychiatrist will consult, guide, advise, train, build capabilities and inform the practice of psychiatrists in the Mental Health Service Corps and other Geriatric Mental Health Initiative programs with oversight by the Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). The Geriatric Consulting Psychiatrist would also advise clinical staff, allied professionals/non-mental health staff working in geriatric primary care practices, mental health programs and social service settings. The psychiatrist will use his/her clinical expertise and knowledge of scientific evidence and current clinical standards to provide training, technical assistance (training support) and clinical consultation. He/she will address knowledge and practice gaps in the following areas:
- Aging and older adult development, behavioral health conditions and preventive factors
- Geriatric psychiatry assessment, diagnostic evaluation, pharmacologic best practices and treatment planning to address biologic, psychosocial, and environmental factors, including families, care givers and other community resources
- Treatment strategy (guidelines) in the homebound and community tenure improvement of older adults
- Integration of behavioral health and primary care services, including substance use disorders
- Initiative development designed around best practices and collaboration to disseminate training to Corps members
- Education, support and consultation to community based programs like Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs)
Additional Activities
- Support Quality Improvement projects within both MHSC and DOHMH
- Drawing on current scientific knowledge and proven best practices, create/adapt guidelines for screening and treating older adults cognitive deficits, including pharmacologic and other clinical, behavioral, and family-based
- Develop and deliver presentations on geriatric psychiatry topics for a variety of clinical and non-clinical audiences.
- Participate in MHSC staff training and development
- Direct evaluation of patients with significant diagnostic or therapeutic challenges who are identified in discussion with the patient’s SW and/or PCP. Such consultation may be provided in person or via telemedicine (video or telephone).
- Development and delivery of in-service training for primary care-based providers and staff regarding recognition and treatment of behavioral health conditions in primary care.

Qualifications
- Board Eligible in Geriatric Psychiatry
- Training or work experience includes a public health focus or orientation.
- Licensed to practice in New York
- Experience consulting to or training clinical and non-clinical staff.
- Experience critically reviewing and summarizing research literature and clinical guidelines for the purposes of dissemination to varied
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation).
- Positive, flexible, and solution-focused attitude.
- Commitment to 3 years of practice in the MHSC
- Ability to effectively engage in therapeutic relationship
- Excellent written/verbal communication and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting
- Strong commitment to work in a high-, underserved community with limited access to behavioral health care
- Sensitivity to diverse cultural and linguistic populations
PREFERENCES:
- Knowledge of city-wide community resources and mental health systems.
- Board-eligible in psychiatry.
- Experience with primary care psychiatry or consultation-liaison psychiatry.

Clinicians will be trained to provide screening, diagnosis, and direct patient care and promote evidence-based treatment and mental health practices.
