General Description
Hunter College seeks a Director of Research Compliance tooversee its Office of Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), InstitutionalAnimal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Research Integrity and Conflict ofInterest processes. The Director will report to the Provost of Hunter Collegeand work closely with Hunter’s Provost and Associate Provost for Research, theCity University of New York (CUNY) HRPP and Research Compliance Offices and theCUNY-wide University Integrated IRBs to facilitate the ethical conduct of researchat Hunter College.
The successful candidate will perform complex duties tofacilitate the success and productivity of Hunter College’s faculty and research enterprise while assuringthe protection of human and other research subjects. Additionally, the Director will be expected toappropriately interpret and apply relevant federal and state laws, regulations,guidelines, and institutional policies and procedures and communicate thoseinterpretations throughout Hunter’sresearch community.
The Director will spend approximately 75% of his/her time onHRPP issues. S/he will oversee thefunctioning of the Hunter College HRPP Office, provide guidance to researchersin the development of IRB protocols, manage policy implementation andeducation, supervise HRPP staff and staff development activities and serve asan advocate for Hunter’s researchers while ensuring compliance with allHRPP policies. The Director will also be expected to support and champion theneeds of Hunter’s researchers priorto, throughout and following the IRB protocol preparation and review process.
Other Duties
Advocate for the success of the Hunter College investigators and their applications in the IRB and IACUC processes while supporting rigorous adherence to all laws and regulations.
Together with the HRPP office staff, IACUC and Hunter’s Research Integrity and Conflict of Interest Officers, develop and deliver effective training and educational programs for Hunter researchers and IRB and IACUC staff regarding the changing landscape of federal and state regulations and CUNY and Hunter policies.
Communicate directly with Hunter’s researchers to convey and interpret regulations and policies in order to help them comply with all requirements.
Create and revise existing Hunter College HRPP procedures so that they are efficient,effective, and helpful to Hunter’s researchers and IRB reviewers.
Act as as stopgap before IRB and IACUC protocols and reviews are sent back to investigators for revisions. In this capacity, the Director will ensure that reviewers’ concerns about protocols, including IRB reviews that are provided to there searcher by the centralized CUNY IRBs are valid and germane to the research and are necessary for the protection of the subjects in the proposed protocol.
This is a 12month appointment and will require year-round dedication
Qualifications
A terminal doctoral research degree (e.g., PhD, DNP, DSW, EdD) required.
First-hand experience with research involving human subjects is required; experience in applied research (e.g., public health, nursing or social work) and/or research with animal subjects is advantageous.
Personal experience with writing, submitting, and going through the IRB approval process(i.e. experience as a P.I. or equivalent) require.
A good working understanding of different experimental designs and types of research with humans and other subjects preferred. For example, psychological or clinical studies are quintessentially different than basic science studies or studies performed in a laboratory setting, and the Director should have an understanding and interest in exploring and understanding these differences.
Ability to work closely with research faculty and staff in order to facilitate their research via an efficient and effective IRB or IACUC review process required.
Ability to provide advocacy, assistance and advice on behalf of and for Hunter’s researchers before, during and after the IRB and IACUC review processes required.
Strong leadership and superior written and oral communications skills required.
Strong management skills to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of Hunter’s HRPP office, IACUC and Research Integrity and Conflict of Interest processes required.
Certification as an IRB professional (CIP) is highly desirable.
Interest in and enthusiasm for learning, understanding and communicating federal, state, CUNY and Hunter policies regarding research with humans and other subjects is desirable.
Experience with the “IDEATE” online IRB management system, recently implemented at CUNY,preferred. CUNY previously used “IRBNet” and some knowledge of this system would also be advantageous.
