General Description

A position is available for a full-time Laboratory Animal Technician in a neuroscience laboratory in the CUNY School of Medicine on the CCNY campus. The laboratory studies development of the motor systems and repair of the motor systems after injury in animals. The successful applicant will assist with animal surgeries, animal care and training, routine data analysis, and engage in routine lab management. The successful applicant must have excellent organizational skills and be able to keep accurate record and notes.

Other Duties

There are 4 principal duties:

(1) Assist during animal surgeries and animal experiments. The applicant will assist laboratory scientists during animal surgeries and experiments, including keeping detailed surgical and experimental records and maintaining intravenous fluid lines. She/he will help with pre- and post-surgical care. She/he also will be responsible for maintaining surgical records.

(2) Assist in training animals to perform movement tasks.

(3) Be willing to be trained in surgical support, experimental support, and to perform routine data analyses.

(4) Administrative duties. The applicant will participate in ordering of laboratory supplies and several aspects of laboratory management pertaining to monitoring and acquisition of supplies.

(5) Work in compliance with applicable CUNY policies and Federal, State and local regulations (e.g., USDA,PHS), follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the laboratory and animal facility, and performs duties in a safe manner.

Qualifications

Education:  

  • AALAS certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT). 
  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in animal science or equivalent; plus, one (1) year of relevant experience preferred.

 

Training and experience:

  • Experience using routine computer programs, such as Microsoft Excel and Word, and general computer use is essential.

 

Skills

  • Ability to work with a team of scientists and students.
  • Ability to keep well-organized records.
  • Willing to be trained to perform laboratory tasks in a safe and timely fashion.
  • The applicant must be willing to be trained to perform her/his duties.
  • Knowledge of basic computing, including the ability to work with Microsoft Excel and Word and calendar scheduling applications.
