Job Description
General Description
The CUNY Institute for Demographic Research (CIDR) is a recruiting a Research Assistant to work with Professor Jennifer Brite, a CIDR Affiliate, on her research project titled A New Perspective on Opioid-Related Deaths of Despair: Public Burials in New York City and Washington, DC. The Data Assistant will work with the PI on data cleaning and standardization, as well as some statistical analysis.
The project has two specific aims:
Aim 1: To provide estimates of opioid-related deaths among those who receive public burial in New York City, NY, and Washington, DC.
Opioid-related deaths are rising dramatically in both locales. Leveraging death certificate data obtained through partnerships with both official jurisdictions, we will examine causes of death related to the opioid epidemic. We will compare increases in opioid-related deaths in the general population to those among decedents who receive a public burial using vital statistics death data.
Aim 2: To examine the impact of the opioid epidemic among vulnerable subgroups.
We will leverage public burial records combined with more detailed death-certificate data in these two large urban areas with differing demographic profiles to examine the impact of opioid-related public burials among racial minorities, those with lower educational attainment, blue-collar workers, the unhoused, and the foreign born.
