General Description

Research Assistant will work closely with PI on the evaluation of a Data Analysis Research Experience (DARE) intervention for CUNY students. Thi sproject is funded with a multi-year grant from the National Science Foundation. 

Activities of the Research Asssitant would include the following:

Data cleaning and management: Data will come from two sources. (1) Instruments measuring cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes, developed by the grant investigators, will be given pre- and post- (beginning and end of semester, respectively) in both intervention and usual practice (control condition) courses. These will be taken from Scantron forms. (2) Institutional research data to provide controls and longer term outcomes. Data confidentiality and integrity must be maintained. Data from both sources must be merged. Merging must be continued and updated as more institutional research data becomes available and is corrected. Data cleaning will be required.  

Statistical analysis: Development and implementation of analysis to investigate continuous, scale, dichotomous and polychotomous cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes, using descriptive statistics, including distribution beyond central tendency and variability, and a wide variety of regression models. Possible Monte Carlo simulations to do detectible effect (power/sample size) calculations.

Create presentations and reports with results

 

Other Duties

Other activities: Coordinate with other investigators and researchers on project. Conduct literature reviews. Opportunity to co-author papers if contributions merit. Possible management of data collection and of other personnel.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

Excellent programmer in Stata, or other statistical packages with ability to learn Stata. Programming practices include good commenting and documentation, ability to reproduce all results, and robust practices that resist bugs, such as loops, macros, etc.  

Experience with data management and cleaning, including merging datasets.

Knowledge of or ability to learn a variety of data analysis techniques, such as quantile regression, factor analysis, placebo tests for difference-in-difference analyses, power/sample-size/detectible effect calculations.

PhD, PhD candidate, or Masters’ degree in economics, quantitative sociology, education policy or related field.

 

Desired qualifications:

Knowledge of R, especially for data management.

Knowledge of higher educational data, especially knowledge of City University of New York Institutional Research Data.

Knowledge of literatures in teaching and learning, quantitative literacy/reasoning, or higher education policy.
