Postdoctoral Research Scientist

 

The Barry Commoner Center for Health and the Environment (BCCHE, located in mid-Queens, is an environmental and occupational health research institute at Queens College, City University of New York, the nation's largest urban public university. The mission of the Center is to identify and help rectify environmental and occupational threats to human health (http://commonercenter.org/index.html). Areas of current research include air pollution, immigrant and occupational health, lung cancer screening and World Trade Center health effects.

BCCHE is seeking a highly motivated scholar to help build an innovative new study focused on developing community-based participatory research approaches to assessing neighborhood air quality in New York City.   This exciting new position offers the opportunity to lead research efforts that add a Citizen Science Program to BCCHE’s landmark study, the New York City Community Air Survey– a collaborative ongoing surveillance program conducted in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to monitor pollution exposures across New York City’s neighborhoods. 

Tasks will involve researching existing methods and programs for community-based participatory research approaches and citizen science techniques to measure community air quality; designing and executing pilot air monitoring studies with local community groups; creating data platforms for housing data from distributed environmental sensors; developing toolkits for conducting citizen science research; conducting GIS research on statistical methods for integrating citizen collected data and data from new generation low-cost air quality sensors with other existing data.

 Appointment will be for 2-years, with continuation depending on funding and progress.

Starting salary is $60,000 to $65,000, commensurate with training and experience. Generous fringe benefits. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts, statement of research interests, and three letters of recommendation.

Additionally, position will entail contributing to developing educational programs for citizen science.

Qualifications

Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. or an equivalent degree in environmental science, atmospheric science, exposure science, data science, engineering, environmental epidemiology or related disciplines. We encourage applications from those with experience in environmental monitoring, field data collection and community-based participatory research, exposure assessment, or data science methods for analyzing large volumes of environmental data. Excellent programming and/or mathematical skills, the ability to work in a team while developing his/her own research interests, and expertise in grant writing and management of scientific projects is preferred.
