General Description
Queensborough CUNY TechWorks is a free tech education initiative that provides career-focused training in software development and web development designed to connect underrepresented and low-income New Yorkers to the growing number of opportunities in NYC's thriving tech sector. Funded by a four-year US Department of Labor grant, we offer participants the opportunity to learn software and web development with expert instructors, as well as paid internship opportunities to gain practical experience in the workplace. Our program also includes support with creating online portfolios, career counseling and job placement assistance.
To support this initiative, we are seeking part-time technical instructors for our 10-week summer bootcamp. Technical instructors are responsible for designing and delivering classroom training, in order to ensure that TechWorks students are equipped for success in entry and mid-level software/web development roles. We are looking for instructors with with energy, creativity and flexibility, who are not only dedicated not just to helping our students learn the material needed to connect with successful careers, but ultimately are committed to improving diversity in tech, as our students come from nontraditional backgrounds which are typically underrepresented in this industry.
Other Duties
-Design project-based lesson plans for a group of 24 students.
-Create and submit training curricula for approval.
-Deliver classroom training in an interactive and dynamic fashion.
-Work collaboratively with other instructors to provide a seamless learning experience.
-Administer assessments as needed, provide evaluation and monitor student progress.
-Guide students through the development of their online portfolios, designed to showcase their skills to potential employers.
-Work closely with the TechWorks team to provide optimal learning, and evolve the curriculum as needed; participate in weekly program status meetings.
-Encourage students to persevere through the challenge of learning to code.
-Be available to work at the Queensborough Community Campus in Bayside, Queens, for up to 19 hours per week, during bootcamp operational hours (10am-6pm, Monday-Friday) from June 3 to August 9, 2019.
Qualifications
Required:
-Must be an expert in one or more of the following areas:
- Front-end languages - HTML, CSS, JavaScript
- Back-end languages - C++, Java, React, PHP, XML, SQL/Databases
- Frameworks - jQuery, Bootstrap
-Smart phone app development
- Others: UX/UI, CMS (Wordpress, Squarespace, etc), Unit Testing, SDLC, Product/Project Management
-Team player; able to work in a collaborative learning environment
-Outstanding programming skills
-Passion for teaching and mentorship
-Excellent communication skills
-Awareness of industry trends and employment requirements
-Entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to excel in a startup-like environment
-Integrate feedback from team members on progress of class to determine tactical interventions
-Guide students to solutions without immediately providing the answer
-Create a safe and collaborative environment where students understand that helping their peers betters their own coding experience
Preferred:
-Bachelor’s Degree
-Experience teaching technology topics to a diverse student population
-Experience with curriculum and syllabus development
-Demonstrated knowledge in one or more object-oriented languages to be used in a production environment
