General Description

The Workforce Development Department prepares New Yorkers to begin and advance their careers through a variety of certificate education and training programs.  Based in LaGuardia Community College’s Division of Adult and Continuing Education, programs follow an industry-informed, career pathways approach and span sectors such as healthcare, technology, construction, media and communications, and more.  

The Vital Brooklyn Building for Efficiency, Sustainability and Green Construction Training Project prepares students to enter the construction field with an understanding of both construction safety and basic skills as well as sustainability principles and practices, especially as they relate to the built environment. 

The Sustainability Instructor will teach the general sustainability course which includes the following topics:

  • Environmental Literacy
  • Water
  • Waste
  • Energy
  • Building
  • Transportation
  • Health, Food & Agriculture
  • Sustainability initiatives in New York City and in companies operating in New York City 

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver course information and instructional objectives in accordance with the established, or other approved, curriculum. (80%)
  • Evaluate students’ performance of course objectives through different forms of course work and activities, and provide feedback to students and the program. (15%)
  • Make recommendations for academic support for students as needed. (3%)
  • Meet with program administrators and other instructional team members. (2%)

Required Qualifications/Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise in the field of sustainability and environmental studies
  • Experience delivering instruction in a training or workforce development environment 

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Strong ability to plan, organize, and deliver instruction to and communicate effectively with adult learners
  • Ability to maintain good relationships with staff and students, and the ability to work collaboratively with staff for continuous improvement
  • Ability to exercise individual initiative, independent action, and sound judgment
  • Candidate should be dedicated to empowering students and serving people of diverse backgrounds

The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) was established as a not-for-profit educational corporation chartered by the State of New York in 1963.
