General Description

The Tech Talent Pipeline is launching the Residency Program’s 4th cohort, an internship placement program at John Jay College. We seek experienced teaching assistants for a 10-week full-stack coding bootcamp. We will hire one (1) Instructor and four (4) Teaching Assistants and one (1) Lead Teaching Assistant. All must have high-level JavaScript experience and classroom experience. All will lead project work and facilitate tutorial and project completion with around 40 CUNY computer science majors. This bootcamp will require some in-person days.

Reports To: Program Manager, TTP Residency at John Jay College of Criminal Justice

Timeline: Anticipated timeframe June 5, 2023 – August 25, 2023

ABOUT THE TECH TALENT PIPELINE: The NYC Tech Talent Pipeline (TTP), an initiative of the WDC, is the City of New York’s tech Industry Partnership, launched in 2014 by Mayor Bill de Blasio to support the inclusive growth of the NYC tech sector and prepare New Yorkers for 21st-century jobs. The NYC Tech Talent Pipeline works with 385+ companies, 17 local colleges, and additional public and private partners to define employer needs, develop training and education models to meet these needs, and scale solutions throughout the city, delivering quality talent for the city’s businesses and quality jobs for New Yorkers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The position requires expertise in Java (preferred) or C++ and a strong, implementation-level knowledge of data structures and algorithms. The instructor must demonstrate impressive proficiency in a combination of front-end and back-end skills such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, SQL, NoSQL, testing, Linux OS, Git, Node + Express, and Play Frameworks.

The Instructor – alongside the Lead Teaching Instructor - will facilitate web development, full-stack development, and cybersecurity instruction to a cohort of 40 students based on the created curriculum. The Instructor will offer design and coding advice, perform code reviews, and ensure that each student is progressing in terms of technical skills, coding projects, presentations, and interview preparation.

The Instructor must hold in-person and/or virtual office hours for at least two hours per week to answer student questions, give mock technical interviews, and provide technical mentoring with an eye toward competitive employment.

  • Deliver Web-Development focused tech skills sessions to residency students
    • Understanding and preparing for each week’s material and assignments
  • Identify any improvements needed to curriculum/delivery, and make timely updates accordingly
  • Support students with building group projects in class, and completing individual projects
  • Manage class, teaching assistants, and the assignments to student groups
  • Deliver final bootcamp report including all pre/post assignments plus individual and capstone projects
  • Review and grade the assignments submitted by the students, including pre/post assessments & capstone projects

Other Duties

  • Collaborating with (1) Lead Teaching Assitant and (4) Teaching Assistants to ensure the success of delivery of the program
  • Helping to design and deliver additional technical training modules and programming assignments for students if/as necessary
  • Assessing and reporting individual student progress, technical competencies, project status, attendance, etc. via shared tools
  • Troubleshooting to keep students on track and engaged and timely escalating concerns or needs to the Program Manager

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Experience in delivering computer science instruction to a live audience
  • Mastery of full-stack web development (React, Node/Express), PostgreSQL, Sequelize, Mongo DB, and mobile technologies
  • Mastery of Git and industry GitHub workflows
  • Experience teaching or learning in a hybrid environment
  • Strong computer programming proficiency
    • Expertise in Java (preferred) or C++
    • Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms and experience implementing them in Java or C++
    • A combination of Front End and Back End software development experience in some of the following: JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, SQL, NoSQL, Linux OS, Git, Node + Express and Play Frameworks, development environment setup/configuration, testing (like Mocha / Chai), and deployment
    • Similar web framework experience will be considered (Ruby on Rails, Django, etc.) but a JavaScript-based one is preferred
    • Talent for connecting with students and encouraging & motivating them

PREFERRED

  • Familiarity with security practices, Heroku/Surge, AWS, and Docker
  • Prior experience working as a teaching assistant in CUNY or a Bootcamp
  • Teaching experience is strongly preferred
  • Industry experience as a software engineer is preferred
