As the predominant land cover type in the 1600 sq. mi. NYC drinking water supply watersheds, forest ecosystems play an important yet poorly understood role in determining the water, nutrient, sediment, and pathogen inputs to the reservoir system.  The forest ecosystem modeling post doc will: a) investigate the current biological, physical, and chemical conditions, and management practices of the forested lands in the NYC water supply watersheds, using all available data sources and tools including remote sensing; b) review available forest models and develop model applications that integrate forest inventory and assessment data with key watershed processes that control forest hydrology, biogeochemistry, and ecosystem structure and function; and c) apply these models and data to project potential effects of changing land use, watershed management, and climate on water quantity and quality of the NYC water supply and the sustainability of the forest ecosystem.  The post-doc will work as part of a larger project on the NYC water supply system with a set of other post-doctoral fellows, NYC-DEP staff, and faculty at collaborating universities. Collaboration and periodic travel with researchers at the University of North Carolina is expected.

This appointment will start as soon as possible, with an end date of June 30, 2017. An extension of one additional year is possible. The position is funded under a contract from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) to the Research Foundation of the City University of New York (RFCUNY), and the applicant will be an employee of RFCUNY but will be located at NYCDEP offices in Kingston, N.Y., 100 miles north of NYC in the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River Valley. The position includes a full suite of benefits offered by RFCUNY.
