Reporting to the managers of Surface Science Core Facility and Imaging Core Facility, the Research Assistant will take responsibility for the day-to-day operation, maintenance and management of state-of-the-art confocal microscopes in both facilities. Duties include participation in scientific research using advanced imaging technologies, provision training and supports to users and collaborators, and be part of publishing scientific journal articles.

 

Other Duties

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

·      Focus on operation and maintenance of Bruker/Andor Bio-AFM system, Leica confocal STED microscope, and WITec Raman confocal microscope.

·      Train/Guide users in sample preparation and operation of the three microscopes, including contribution to production of training manuals.

·      Contribute to planning and management of booking, access and finances related to the microscopes.

·      Contribute to planning the updates of the microscopes.

·      Actively support collaborative research that requires the three instruments.

·      Keeps records of orders and supplies/consumables for the three microscopes.

·      Performs other duties as needed.

Qualifications

MINIMUM Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in physics/biology/chemistry or related fields. Candidate should have well-rounded scientific background on fluorescence confocal microscopy.

 

 

OTHER Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and professional competencies:

-      Good working knowledge of and hand-on experience in fluorescence confocal microscopy.

-      Desired skills in problem solving, execution of scientific research, technical writing, and oral presentation.

-      Highly motivated with an ability to work independently and in teams.

-      Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work to meet tight deadlines.

-      Strong attention to detail.

-      Good communication skills are essential.

-      Digital image visualization and processing experience are not necessary but plus.
