Letter from the Chairman of the Board and the President
At The City University of New York, sponsored programs are an integral part of the University’s
mission. With the financial support of government agencies, private foundations, corpora-
tions, labor unions, and even individuals, faculty and staff pursue their particular areas of
interest and expertise. In doing so, they create knowledge, train future scientists and
mathematicians, promote international cooperation, generate employment opportunities,
strengthen national security, and address urgent problems facing our communities. That
external support is supplemented by campus in-kind support in the form of facilities,
released time, equipment, and much more.
The Research Foundation is CUNY’s partner in the sponsored program enterprise. We pro-
vide the administrative backbone that frees faculty and staff to succeed in attracting extra-
mural support and to use that support productively and responsibly. As fiscal agent for
CUNY, the Research Foundation is the recipient of all funds for grants and contracts. We
negotiate and execute the agreements, maintain the records, file the reports, manage
sponsor terms and conditions, oversee leasing and construction, employ all project staff,
and purchase the goods and services that make the projects possible.
In any given year, more than 12,000 individuals are paid by the Research Foundation to work
in the laboratories, theaters, classrooms, after-school centers, field stations, and offices
both on and off campus where sponsored programs are carried out. From Antarctica to
Afghanistan, the Research Foundation is the critical link that enables principal investigators
(as grant and contract recipients are known) to concentrate on fulfilling the purposes of
their awards rather than the administrative tasks associated with them.
We do so with an experienced and dedicated staff, combined with the latest technology
that provides ease of access from virtually anywhere in the world.
