of sponsored programs that includes the social sciences, arts, and humanities. Sponsored pro-grams lead to both the development of new knowledge and the provision of important services. Together, they help address the many challenges before us. At the Research Foundation, we facilitate such activity by carrying out numerous administrative tasks necessary for the suc cessful accomplishment of award purposes. We also support the work of various not-for-profit organizations that deliver critical social services.

This annual report contains detailed information on activity in 2010 (the midpoint of CUNY’s Decade of Science). In that year, CUNY’s principal investigators (PIs) were responsible for over $430 million in awards. This is funding above and beyond what the University received from the state and city for operations and construction. Awards have helped PIs delve into the mechanisms of diseases, provide the unemployed and underemployed with new skills, reverse environmental decline, unravel the mysteries of other civilizations, and improve manufacturing processes. And, on a more prosaic level, this funding has helped employ 12,000 full- and part-time staff.

This annual report of the Research Foundation celebrates the achievements of all our PIs by presenting a small but representative sample of the good works in which they are involved, made possible by funding from governmental and private sources. We hope you find the following pages engaging and enlightening.

Respectfully submitted,

Matthew Goldstein Richard F. Rothbard Chairman of the Board President
