Matthew Goldstein Chairman of the Board

We do so, in part, by harnessing the economic and intellectual might that still makes this country a powerful magnet for people from every part of the world.

Now consider The City University of New York: CUNY works closely with public and private schools to improve student preparedness; it helps aspiring college students understand what it will take to succeed in college; it collaborates with, and operates, numerous high schools; and it provides undergraduate and graduate preparation to those who become teachers in New York City.

Once students enroll in degree programs at one of CUNY’s 23 institutions, they have an oppor-tunity to experience a wide range of curricular offerings that position them for even higher levels of educational attainment or for the workforce. Through its continuing education programs, CUNY provides hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers with opportunities for job training, cultural enrichment, and personal growth. Whatever they choose to study, students are guided by faculty who are distinguished in every area of human inquiry and practice, and who combine tradition with innovation in the classroom.

In addition, CUNY is emphasizing the importance of increased participation and proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through its Decade of Science initiative. It has taken very practical steps in this regard by hiring more full-time faculty, expanding programs, building more science and engineering facilities, and promoting greater involvement in research activities.

This last area is where the Research Foundation plays a unique role. We support faculty efforts to identify and secure outside funding not only in STEM disciplines but across the entire panoply
