General Description
CUNY Citizenship Now! provides free, high quality, and confidential immigration law services to help individuals and families on their path to U.S. citizenship. Our attorneys and paralegals offer one-on-one consultations to assess participants’ eligibility for legal benefits and assist them in applying when qualified. In addition to providing consultations and application assistance to the immigrant community at our centers, we regularly hold Citizenship Events in all five boroughs to assist members of the community with citizenship and naturalization issues.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Managing Attorney for Community Events, this position is responsible for overseeing an active network of over 400 volunteers including program functions, logistics and activities in support of Citizenship Now! needs at community events. This position serves as lead in recruitment, utilization, communication and coordination of volunteers. Additionally, the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator works in close collaboration with other CN! departments and other organizations to share overlapping coordination efforts including training, volunteer supervision, support, recognition and communication with volunteers. The eligible candidate must possess great strategic, organizational and conceptual thinking abilities to enhance our current volunteer program, replicate our volunteer practices, and assist with adapting and evolving our legal services model to enhance quality and efficiency.
Job Duties
- Recruit and schedule volunteers for bi-monthly Citizenship Now! Application Assistance Events and other annual events in New York City (about 60 volunteers per event, depending on event size).
- Enhance our strategies to attract, cultivate, utilize and retain volunteers, routinely engaging with new potential volunteer/sponsor groups.
- Respond to volunteer’s requests and inquiries in a timely manner.
- Place volunteers and staff in event assignments matching their qualifications and training, ensuring orientation and preparation materials are provided beforehand.
- Be the point of contact for volunteers at each event to provide a rewarding experience by conducting volunteer orientation, rotating assignments as necessary and fielding questions or complaints.
- Troubleshoot event logistics in collaboration with CN! staff to improve volunteer, staff and participant experiences and to create efficiencies.
- Coordinate, develop and facilitate trainings for volunteers in coordination with our legal staff.
- Solicit and track event feedback and outcomes, analyzing averages and trends to create strategic improvements for our services.
- Manage the Volunteer Advisory Committee, setting up meetings, gathering feedback and planning the Volunteer Appreciation party.
Other Duties
- Collaborate with Citizenship Now! staff to develop, revise and track position descriptions to fit available volunteer roles throughout the year, particularly during the summer. Screen, interview, assist with placement of volunteers filling organizational needs (throughout our various locations).
- Assist local and national partners in developing systems to recruit and manage their own volunteer networks.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
Qualifications
- Passion for immigration issues.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- At least two years of experience in a similar position, with proven ability to mobilize, direct, and motivate volunteers.
- Strong written and oral communication skills. Detail-oriented and accurate.
- Proven organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent presentation and strong relationship or “people” skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimal oversight, but also takes direction well and is eager to meet or exceed performance goals.
- Capacity and flexibility to thrive under pressure while managing multiple tasks and projects.
- Ability to set priorities for self, team and peers, and adjust when priorities change.
- Proficient using all Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.
- This full-time position requires working occasional evenings, at least one Saturday per month and occasional travel.
