Through its partnership with the City of New York, CUNY’s Building Performance Laboratory is hiring qualified energy management professionals to serve as on-site consultants and fill critical staffing capacity needs at the Department of Citywide Administrative Services’ (“DCAS”) Division of Energy Management (“DEM”) and its agency partners. The Department of Education (“DOE”) is a critical partner in contributing to the City’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (“GHG”) by 80 percent by 2050 from a 2005 baseline (“80x50”). As part of the Climate Mobilization Act (LL 97 of 2019), the City also recently set new targets to reduce emissions from City government operations by 40 percent by 2025 (“40x25”) and by 50 percent by 2030 (“50x30”). DOE’s Energy Team consists of staff sitting within the Division of School Facilities’ Office of Maintenance and Optimization and the Office of Sustainability. The DOE Energy Team oversees energy management and emissions reductions activities across DOE’s portfolio, which includes more than 1,400 buildings, accounting for 131M square feet, and represents approximately 40 percent of total City-owned building square footage. DOE also is the largest energy-consuming City agency, accounting for nearly 22 percent of City government’s energy consumption. For this specific role, CUNY BPL is hiring an Energy Project Manager, BMS and Controls to be embedded within DOE’s Energy Team, located within the Office of Maintenance and Optimization. The Energy Project Manager will support the implementation of energy projects related to building controls systems.

Other Duties

During their assignments, the person’s responsibilities may include the following:

  • Delivering energy projects in facilities with BMS and HVAC digital controls systems.
  • Implementing a plan to upgrade outdated and defunct BMS systems across DOE’s portfolio.
  • Remotely monitoring BMS for consistent operation.
  • Supporting BMS maintenance.
  • Supporting identification of Load Management opportunities.
  • Supporting building audits associated with Local Law 87.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring the following education, skills, and experience to this position:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, architectural technology, landscape architecture, construction, construction technology, or construction management.
  • At least two years of experience managing and/or inspecting one or more construction projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics and drawings.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE guidelines for high-performance buildings.
  • Knowledge of equipment vendors and vendor-specific programming, specifically Johnson Controls, Distech, Schneider, and Siemens.
  • Niagara N4 certification.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel to manage data.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage simultaneous projects.
  • A motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York.
