General Description

The Office of the Senior University Dean (SUD) for Academic Affairs is seeking a highly experienced math educator to support an array of OAA programs that offer math instruction to students at various levels of their education journeys: high school, college transition, adult continuing education learners, and early childhood education teachers in training. The Senior Curriculum and Professional Developer for Mathematics will work closely with program leadership and staff to develop curriculum, professional development, and other program innovations in order to improve math instruction and students’ math performance across CUNY.

 

The Senior Curriculum and Professional Developer for Mathematics will report to the Dean for K-16 Initiatives, but will work on a variety of projects across the above program areas as needed. This position will require responsiveness to a variety of projects and their leadership, simultaneously, and requires a significant degree of collaboration.

Other Duties

  • Work closely with OAA program leadership and staff to assess math instruction, curriculum, teacher training, and research needs within designated program areas (i.e.: K-16 Initiatives, CUNY Start/Math Start, Adult and Continuing Education, and Early Childhood PDI); 
  • Research, develop, field test, and/or refine innovative math curricula to support students, teachers, and staff in achieving program-specific goals;
  • Develop and deliver professional development to teachers engaged in math instruction, especially to foster innovative and effective pedagogy;
  • Support existing program staff engaged in math curriculum/professional development as they build their capacity to engage and support students and teachers;
  • Observe and provide feedback to teachers and program staff as they provide mathematics instruction, and implement programmatic curricula;
  • Advise on development of evaluation agendas to assess efficacy of math curricula, teaching, and training;
  • As appropriate, advise OAA leaders on opportunities for new programs that address mathematics instruction;
  • Develop proposals for grant funding to support innovative math instructional projects;
  • Participate in select University-wide math remediation reform initiatives aimed at improving math success of CUNY students; and
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of experience teaching mathematics and developing and implementing innovative math curricula and programs for students at various levels across the K-16 continuum, especially for students who are considered to be underprepared in mathematics;
  • Significant experience training teachers in instructional practices, tasks, and math curricula that foster conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, reasoning skills, communication skills, and procedural fluency;
  • Deep understanding of K-16 math content standards, assessments, and math pathways;
  • Strong understanding of emerging innovations in K-16 math assessment, placement, pathways, and instruction, both nationally and locally;
  • Experience conducting research to support pedagogical or other program innovations that support improved student outcomes in mathematics;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills with ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse community of students, teachers, staff and external constituents in a large, centralized and public university system;
  • Excellent teaching and coaching skills plus strong presentation, group facilitation and writing skills;
  • Detail-oriented and accurate with sound research, analysis, and data management skills;
  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills to create and execute work plans, prioritize work, coordinate multiple assignments, and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work across multiple programs serving students of various ages and math profiles;
  • Flexibility to work independently and as a member of a team as needed;
