General Description

CUNY K-16 Initiatives works with NYC public schools to increase students’ college access and success, facilitating their transition to post-secondary education and careers. The Web Applications Developer is a member of the CUNY K16 Initiatives team responsible for the content management systems that support existing and new K16 Initiatives and its portfolio of programs’ websites, as well as applications for audio/video, mobile and social media. The Developer will participate in a priority project migrating existing websites into the cuny.edu framework.   This role will be responsible with members of the CUNY web services team and other members across the organization for support, development, integration and expansion of websites and related web applications for program operations.

With considerable latitude for independent initiative and judgment, the Web Developer reports to the Deputy Director of K-16 Initiatives. We are seeking a well-rounded back-end developer with the ability to think through complex problems in an open-source environment. Candidates should possess strong technical, analytical and communication skills, strong knowledge of WordPress and its catalog of plug-ins, and be able to work independently while still functioning as part of a team.

The Web Developer will:

  • Configure, develop and maintain a Drupal (and non-Drupal, WordPress) CMS and integrate appropriate modules.
  • Develop and augment related systems, working in close cooperation with back-end and front-end developers.
  • Disseminate knowledge of a new CMS or CMS components to the K16 Initiatives and web services teams.
  • Analyze systems/technologies and advise on technical requirements and map to appropriate Drupal modules/non-Drupal technologies.
  • Write custom code for enhancing existing systems or developing new web applications
  • Create and enhance database structures in accordance with web applications.

 

Other Duties

  • Researches new technologies, standards, and make recommendations for upgrades to systems.
  • Serve as backup server administrator if needed.
  • Disseminating knowledge and cross-training to all applicable team members.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Proven capability in developing/managing a CMS and in designing and implementing components for a CMS in an open source environment. Some drupal experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in PHP and object oriented programming, with a good knowledge of MySQL.
  • Strong knowledge of WordPress and plug-ins.
  • Experience in the LAMP environment.
  • Ability to learn new languages and frameworks as required.
  • Ability to evaluate community-supplied Drupal modules.
  • Knowledge of developing custom Drupal modules or the ability to learn quickly.
  • At least basic knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Experience developing applications for social networks and mobile a plus.
