The Office of Workforce Development and Innovation develops workforce training programs designed to address critical skill gaps in high growth industries.  Workforce Development provides quality, flexible and cost effective training to support the educational and training goals of individuals and organizations. We offer certificate programs and professional development courses in the healthcare, technology and business sectors. Our department draws upon the expertise of faculty and subject matter experts to deliver quality training programs.

The DEP Grade Course Instructor will deliver effective instruction in the Basic Operations, Activated Sludge, and Basic Lab modules to DEP and DC37 employees.

Topics in Basic Operations include but are not limited to  introduction to wastewater treatment, Preliminary and Primary wastewater treatment, secondary wastewater treatment, advanced wastewater treatment, disinfection and effluent disposal, solids management, equipment and support systems and monitoring and regulatory requirements.

Topics in Activated Sludge include but are not limited to fundamentals of the activated sludge process, microbiology in activated sludge, control testing, flow control and associated calculations RAS and WAS flow control strategies and discuss techniques used in troubleshooting problems that may arise in the process.

Topics in Basic Lab include but are not limited to determining Biological Oxygen Demand, Total Suspended Solids, pH, Dissolved Oxygen, Settable Solids, Mixed Liquor settleability, coliform, sample collection, storage and preservation and all associated calculations.

Other Duties

  • Create a student centered, engaging learning environment;
  • Assess student progress and provide verbal and written feedback;
  • Maintain attendance records and perform student follow up as necessary;
  • Assist with student intake, orientation and program completion ceremonies;
  • Other program related tasks or special projects as assigned by the DEP

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required and:
    • Possess a Grade 4A Wastewater Operator’s License OR
    • Be able to obtain the license within 6 months of working
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant
  • At least two years of prior teaching experience
  • Strong content knowledge of Basic Operations, Activated Sludge, and Basic Lab
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
