General Description

The City University of New York's newest facility, the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), boasts the success of the University's rich past, and the determination to become a national leader in visionary scientific research in the future. With a focus in the fields of Nanotechnology, Photonics, Structural Biology, Neuroscience, and Environmental Sciences, the ASRC will operate as a nucleus of a University-wide science enterprise, fostering the development of an integrated research network that brings together faculty, students, and post-doctoral fellows from CUNY's colleges across the five boroughs. This state-of-the-art facility will house a staff of elite scientists and leaders who will seek to break down the walls between disparate but increasingly inter-related disciplines of applied science. The Nanoscience Initiative of the ASRC covers two floors of this six-story building and operates three wet chemistry laboratories and two facilities suites for imaging and surface analysis. The ASRC seeks a Laboratory Technician to join the Nanoscience Initiative to support the laboratory activities of research teams of highly interdisciplinary nanoscience research.

 

Other Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Instrument upkeep and maintenance
  • Chemical waste monitoring and disposal
  • Maintaining stock levels and inventorying of general consumables and laboratory items
  • Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties
  • Performing related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An Associate’s Degree in a related field of study from an accredited institution and three (3) years’ experience performing technical work suitable to the technical needs of the project; OR
  • An Bachelor’s Degree in a related field of study from an accredited institution and one (1) year experience performing technical work suitable to the technical needs of the project; OR
  • Equivalent education and experience, as evidenced in technical work assignments; however all candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent: AND
  • Possession of the core competencies determined to be required at the time of hire.

Ideal candidates will also possess the following knowledge, skills and professional capabilities:

  • Basic understanding and practice of the handling of hazardous materials is essential.
  • Basic experience in experimental sciences
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well independently or as part of a team, with the ability to successfully motivate a team
  • Ability to plan workload effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Previous experience of laboratory technical support
