General Description

The Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College (CLSJ) addresses racial justice issues by providing quality legal advocacy, conducting community education campaigns, facilitating research and building organizing capacity on behalf of New Yorkers of African descent and the disenfranchised. Since 1986, CLSJ has equipped Black New Yorkers with specific information and tools needed to effectively advocate for resources and political representation required for their communities to prosper.  CLSJ seeks a Project Director to guide and direct its Redistricting Project.  This successful candidate will:

  • Know the political and legal history of redistricting leading up to the present day environment;
  • Be able to analyze census data; understand and demystify principles used to guide the drawing of district lines, such as equal representation and respecting county boundaries;
  • Translate technical redistricting data into accessible information to educate community organizations and interested individuals about the process; and
  • Be familiar with the calendar of milestones and deadlines associated with the redistricting process.

Other Duties

The Redistricting Project Director will execute the following tasks:

  • Direct and monitor work of CLSJ researchers, legal team and mappers;
  • Work with Redistricting attorneys and coalition partners to stay abreast of legal developments in relevant cases, regulations and laws;
  • Monitor and report the progress of the New York State Redistricting Commission and relevant political developments in the state and local legislatures;
  • Track and report  CLSJ Redistricting Project’s strategies and activities to ensure goals and objectives are achieved;
  • Work with the communications team to develop written materials and online programming on redistricting; 
  • Engage and organize community leaders, civic leaders and interested residents to create consensus maps for congressional and legislative districts in New York City;
  • Prepare community groups and individuals to participate in the 2021 redistricting commission hearings; and
  • Organize two citywide forums on redistricting for community organizations, civic leaders and other residents.

Qualifications

 

  • Demonstrable background in community organizing;
  • Five years or more campaign experience in an management role, preferably in a nonprofit, public policy or advocacy-oriented setting;
  • Commitment to racial and social justice movements;
  • Superb project management, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Well-organized and attentive to details; and
  • Able to work independently and also collaboratively with others, maintaining a positive, professional attitude.
