General Description

Lehman College is seeking a Director for the Wellness Education and Health Promotion Program. The Director will lead in the strategic planning and implementation of prevention programs and initiatives directed at improving the well-being of Lehman College students. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the organization and operation of the Wellness Center. The Director is part of the Student Affairs Leadership Team in the Division of Student Affairs.


The Director is responsible for strategic planning, administrative oversight, development/delivery, coordination, and assessment of initiatives and programs to address student health and wellness issues with particular emphasis on alcohol and other drug use, resiliency, and sexual violence prevention programs. This work involves applying knowledge of current and emerging college health issues, environmental management/prevention strategies, health behavior change theories, public health frameworks, and evidence-informed practice in college-age populations.


This position reports to the Director of Student Support Programs. This position provides direct supervision for the Wellness Program Coordinator, the College Prevention Coordinator and oversees student programs such as the Wellness Promoters and Coaches.

Other Duties

  • Provide strategic direction and administrative oversight for the programs and initiatives of the Wellness Center using an integrated, team approach.
  • Contribute to the leadership decisions of the Division of Student Affairs by serving on the Student Affairs Leadership Team and the Wellness and Inclusion sudgroup.
  • Provide direct supervision and training for professional staff, support staff, and student employees and/or interns in the Wellness Center.
  • Build and foster collaborative partnerships with Lehman College senior leadership and relevant campus partners, committees, student groups, and local/national organizations to foster student wellness, retention, and success.
  • Plan, implement, and assess strategies and support related activities that are consistent with best practices for reducing risk and promoting health on issues such as substance use, resiliency, mental health, and other concerns relevant to college students.
  • Provide direct leadership for the Lehman Prevention Collaborative. Oversee strategic efforts for substance misuse prevention and harm reduction on campus, utilizing evidence-based practices. Plan, implement, and evaluate related programs and services, including online educational modules for incoming students and sanctioned students.
  • Provide Mentorship and training to students in the areas of health education, literacy and communication and public health.
  • Provide direct leadership for the Wellness Coaching and Wellness Promoter Programs. Provide one-on-one wellness coaching sessions and group workshops for students when needed, to supplement the work of the Wellness Coaches. Develop new program content in line with emerging research and best practices.
  • Apply knowledge of research methodology (survey design, environmental scans, focus groups, and other qualitative/quantitative data collection tools) to assess needs and inform program development and evaluation. Use data to educate the campus community about student health issues.
  • Direct health-related communication strategies for the Wellness Center through a variety of channels including website content, print material, social media, and other digital media.
  • Consult with campus partners regarding student health concerns. Provide assistance with identification, intervention, and referral of students with health-related concerns.
  • Plan and organize professional development opportunities for campus partners and/or external groups as needed to foster student health and wellbeing. This may include identifying and collaborating with experts in the field to provide training and consultation services.
  • Provide oversight for the budget and financial expenditures of the Wellness Center. Identify and foster additional funding opportunities in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs and other campus stakeholders.
  • Represent the Wellness Center on divisional and college-wide committees. Prepare annual and other reports and presentations as needed to further the mission of the Wellness Center

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in public health, health promotion, health education, or closely related field.
  • Minimum three to five years' experience working with students in a college health promotion setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and leadership skills in public health approaches, behavior change theory, and evidence-based practices in college health, particularly in alcohol/other drug prevention approaches.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity as well as harm reduction principles and approaches.
  • Competency in use of technology such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, CUNYFirst and other programs.
