Job Description
General Description
The Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at Hunter College, in conjunction with the Program in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at the CUNY Graduate Center, is searching for a full-time postdoctoral researcher to begin in December 2022 or January 2023 on an NIH-funded study, “The Effect of Social Isolation on Lexical Retrieval in Elderly Adults.” Although substantial advances have been made in our understanding of social isolation and its influence on cognition in aging, the scope of what can be determined from measures of cognitive performance alone is limited. Most crucially, we do not yet know the effects of reduction in communication due to social isolation on word retrieval.
Other Duties
The postdoc will be involved in completing the design and running in-person experimental studies in healthy older adults, in addition to supervising graduate-level research assistants, analyzing data, and working with both Drs. Amy Vogel-Eyny and Loraine Obler on manuscript preparation and other scholarly writing. The postdoc will be mentored on professional development skills for career advancement.
Qualifications
Candidates with a Ph.D. in communication sciences and disorders, experimental linguistics, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have strong communication skills (written and oral), problem-solving ability, statistical skills and the ability to work flexible hours given participant testing needs. The work will be in-person in New York City. The initial appointment will be for one year, with possible renewal for an additional year. Salary will be consistent with NIH policy for postdoctoral positions and will include eligibility for health benefits. Interested applicants should contact Drs. Vogel-Eyny and Obler (avoge@hunter.cuny.edu, loraine.obler@gmail.com) with questions about the position and send a cover letter explaining their interest in the position and suitability for it along with their CV, links to 2 or more representative publications, and the names of three references. The position will remain open until filled.
