Job Description

General Description

Postdoctoral Fellow Position Available

The Likhtik Lab is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join one of two funded projects focused on uncovering novel circuit function during cognition. We are a growing, dynamic, and supportive team at Hunter College (City University of New York) studying neural and glial functions that define cross-regional communication patterns during learning and memory.  We use animal models to probe changes that occur as a function of stress and anxiety, including altered communication patterns, changes in cellular activity, and molecular expression. Our techniques span in-vivo electrophysiology during behavior, circuit manipulation techniques (e.g. optogenetics, pharmacology), neuroanatomical tracing, molecular analysis (e.g. qPCR, RNA Scope), immunohistochemistry, image analysis, and other tools to further our understanding of neural computations associated with learning.  We are interdisciplinary, collaborative and interested in translational neuroscience. The lab is located at Hunter College in the heart of New York City, a senior college at the largest public urban university in the US. Hunter is a culturally diverse school that prides itself on contributing to academic excellence and social mobility.

Training Environment: There is a strong culture of support and training in the lab. The lab is in the Biology Department where faculty study all aspects of biology, from channel physiology to myelination, and immunology, to cancer and olfaction. The Biology Department is part of a broader interdisciplinary neuroscience community on the Hunter campus, across CUNY campuses, and is knit into the research fabric of New York City as a whole, where neuroscience research thrives. As such, we collaborate with colleagues in the Psychology Dept. at Hunter College, the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) at CUNY, at Weil-Cornell, and Columbia University. Postdoctoral fellows have access to a wide array of professional, and personal development courses/events provided through The Graduate Center at CUNY, where Dr. Likhtik also holds an appointment.

About the Research Foundation

The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) was established as a not-for-profit educational corporation chartered by the State of New York in 1963. RFCUNY supports CUNY faculty and staff in identifying and obtaining external support (pre-award) from government and private sponsors and is responsible for the administration of all such funded programs (post-award).

RFCUNY stands between CUNY’s principal investigators (PIs) and the sponsors who support them and strives to fulfill its essential responsibilities to both groups. Working closely with individual PIs and Grants Officers on the campuses, RFCUNY oversees employment, accounting, audit, reporting, purchasing, and special responsibilities that include management of a planned giving program; liaison with governmental agencies and foundations; negotiation of agreements; facility construction and renovation; protection and commercialization of intellectual property; and compliance with applicable standards in research involving human subjects, animal care, environmental and radiological safety, and conflicts of interest.
