General Description
A postdoctoral researcher position is available in the Shusterman Group in the Department of Chemistry at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY). The research in the Shusterman lab is focused on the investigation of isotope production pathways, materials for heavy metal separations, and radiochemical measurements of nuclear reaction properties for application to the nuclear fuel cycle, medicine, forensics and fundamental nuclear science.
The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, radiochemistry, nuclear engineering, or related fields. The postdoctoral researcher will be working on projects that involve materials synthesis, separations, irradiations at accelerator facilities, and spectroscopic analyses. Experience handling dispersible radioactive materials is preferred, however candidates without this background will also be considered, particularly in the area of materials synthesis.
Other Duties
-Work with and mentor graduate and undergraduate students
-Follow institutional and laboratory specific safety policies
-Participate in offsite experiments as required, which will involve travel
Qualifications
Required
-Ph.D. degree in chemistry, radiochemistry, nuclear engineering, or closely related fields
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-Excellent laboratory skills and safe chemical handling practices
Preferred
-Experience in handling dispersible radioactive materials
-Experience in working with nuclear counting equipment
-Experience in materials synthesis and characterization techniques (SS-NMR, TEM, FTIR, XAS, etc)
-Experience in supervising undergraduate students and/or graduate students
-Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
-Strong leadership qualities and self-motivated
