The New York City Mental Health Service Corps (MHSC) is a key initiative of Thrive NYC: A Mental Health Roadmap for All– a comprehensive public health approach to mental health designed to promote and protect the wellbeing of all New Yorkers. The MHSC fills the too long neglected gaps in mental health and substance use services throughout NYC by creating a corps of approximately 400 mental health clinicians placed in high-need communities. Through best practices and a better design of care, the initiative will increase the diversity of behavioral health clinicians in the workforce and strengthen care where it is needed the most.

MHSC focuses on the recruitment, training, and support of early career social workers and licensed mental health counselors to become fully licensed behavioral health clinicians with a specific focus on incorporating evidence-based practices in primary care and behavioral health settings throughout New York City. Through a structured supervision system and task-shifting model, clinicians are able to obtain advanced licensure through the MHSC and strengthen their own capacity to be able to provide sound behavioral health services in marginalized communities and populations. MHSC is a city-funded program housed under Hunter College, CUNY and the Research Foundation of CUNY. All MHSC staff are employees of the Research Foundation of CUNY.

The Behavioral Health Clinicians are composed of Social Workers and Licensed Mental Health Counselors who will be oriented, trained, encouraged, and properly supervised to deliver evidence-based practices appropriate to their practice setting. Upon completion of this prestigious period of service, they will have made an important contribution to the mental health of New Yorkers and, depending on the profession, earned the clinical practice and supervision hours necessary to obtain clinical licensure. Clinicians will serve in the MHSC for three years.

Positions are available for ongoing vacancies in Nurse Family Partnership Sites.

Other Duties

  • Conduct home visits to new mothers in New York City in this new and innovative program.
  • Provide individual, supportive and family therapy to participants.
  • Work collaboratively with Medical Personnel to provide true integrated care.
  • To develop an initial assessment based on the new client protocols of MHSC.
  • To develop a prospective Treatment Plan for each new client at intake.
  • To engage the client in weekly (or as needed) individual sessions based on the utilization of Evidence Based practice interventions and the Treatment Plan.
  • To engage the client in weekly (or as needed) group sessions based on the utilization of Evidence Based practice interventions and the Treatment Plan.
  • To document progress toward goals and insure fidelity in weekly Progress Notes documenting contact and outcomes.
  • To assist in initiating the Comprehensive Treatment Plan and to correct, change and update with the Treatment Team.
  • To coordinate all correspondence and documentation requirements as required by MHSC protocols.
  • To develop and compile an accurate and up-to-date listing of all appropriate, community based, culturally, linguistically competent agencies which clients can be referred to in their community.
  • To facilitate referrals for clients as needed to these agencies.
  • To communicate with the social workers at the referring agency as necessary.
  • To develop working relationships with the above agencies, to facilitate expeditious service delivery for clients.
  • Meet regularly with Supervisor to discuss concerns and carry out plans for each client.
  • Discuss clients’ needs and problems with MHSC supervisor during supervisory sessions.
  • Attend and participate in all appropriate clinical case conferences, in service training sessions, and staff meetings.
  • Alert appropriate members of the MHSC Administration of emergencies, which jeopardize the client's stability within the community or family so that all available resources may be used to meet immediate needs on an ongoing basis.
  • To maintain client confidentiality as guaranteed by the Social Security Act and HIPPA.
  • To follow MHSC agency procedure for reporting Suspected Abuse or Maltreatment.

 

Other Duties

  • Work in conjunction with the staff in the MHSC programs, locally and Citywide.
  • Work with community based agencies where clients are referred.

Qualifications

  • MHC or MSW from accredited school and full licensure is required (LMHC or LCSW)
  • Work Schedule may vary and include days, nights and weekends.
  • The position requires home visits
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills
  • Commitment to 3 years of practice with Mental Health Service Corps.

PREFERENCES:

  • Knowledge of city-wide community resources and mental health systems.
  • Bi-lingual and able to conduct therapy in English plus another language including, but not limited to Spanish, Mandarin, Thai, Cantonese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, German, Greek, Italian, French, French-Creole, Portuguese, Hebrew, Haitian-Creole, Arabic, Egyptian, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Polish, Serbian, Serbo-Croatian, American Sign Language, etc.
