The New York City Labor Market Information Service (NYCLMIS), housed at the Center for Urban Research at the CUNY Graduate Center, seeks a part-time Senior Research Associate to join a team of researchers and consultants specialized in labor market data and workforce development topics. The heart of our work is researching and advocating for the best-practices and strategies that improve opportunities for those at the bottom half of the economic ladder. Position Description
With supervision and support from the NYCLMIS director and fellow senior staff, the Senior Research Associate will lead and support multiple research projects - particularly, by making expert use of labor market and economic data sources.
Other Duties
- Work with partners and clients to determine research question(s) and design, project timeline, and project deliverables
- Interpret and summarize findings and producing data visualizations
- Supervise and/ or conduct data collection, including:
- Survey implementation
- Accessing economic, labor market, and labor force secondary data sets
- Semi-structured interviews/focus groups with industry stakeholders
- Write reports and briefs
- Present research findings to clients and end users
- Lead labor market information trainings
- Participate in other research and technical assistance activities as needed
Qualifications
Required
- Master's degree and at least 4 years professional experience in a related position (experience may be substituted for additional education)
- Strong quantitative skills including cleaning, managing, and analyzing data
- Proficient in at least one statistical analysis software package (STATA, R, SAS, SPSS)
- Experience using a variety of publicly available labor market and economic data sources, e.g. the American Community Survey, the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, and data published by the New York State Department of Labor
- Ability to communicate research findings clearly to diverse audiences, including developing charts and figures and drafting corresponding narrative
- Experience with qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and standard practices
- Proven track record of collaboration, flexibility, and responsiveness to deadlines with both colleagues and external partners
Preferred
- Well-developed qualitative and/or mixed method research skills
- Proficient in at least one qualitative analysis software package (NVIVO, Atlas.ti, Dedoose)
- Experience working on qualitative analysis teams of two or more researchers, conducting content and thematic analyses, and developing interview topic guides
- Familiarity with – or interest in –workforce development policies and programs
- Experience working within a client-centered, team- and project-based environment
