The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute is looking for a Research Associate Data Scientist to join the Institute’s Research Data Science Team. The candidate is expected to be familiar with programming languages (i.e., Python or R), experienced with data analysis and visualization, knowledgeable of machine learning methods (computer vision, NLP), including familiarity with popular machine learning libraries, such as Scikit-learn and PyTorch. Applicants should also have extensive training or research experience in early modern Latin American and/or Spanish Caribbean history or a related field, and be familiar with CUNY DSI’s Spanish Paleography Digital Teaching & Learning Tool or any other similar computer program.

This is a one-year position with the possibility of a second-year contract, depending on performance and availability of funding.

Other Duties

The person selected will use data science, machine learning techniques, and research skills to extract information from digital copies of primary documents related to the sixteenth- and seventeenth- century La Espanola and the New World. The candidate will work with statistics and data computation on specific research questions that seek to fill historical vacuums and create new knowledge concerning everyday life in La Espanola, as European colonization unfolded in what became the first permanent European settlement in the Americas. Research questions include the preparation of detailed lists of enslaved African Black people, forms of resistance against enslavement and oppression, number of manumissions, maroon settlements, informal and formal punitive actions against social transgressions, vital data (birth, death, matrimony, etc.), among other topics that help describe colonial social daily life in La Espanola. The Research Associate Data Scientist will work with the CUNY DSI Colonial Documents Collection containing approximately 90,000 images of colonial documents from 43 archival bundles, contained in 102 microfilm reels.

 

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Latin American or Spanish Caribbean History or related field with extensive training in computational/digital social science or humanities and machine learning analysis, as well as research and data preparation and analysis. The preferred candidate will have training on applying machine learning to Spanish paleography on early European colonization of Latin America or the Spanish Caribbean.
