General Description

The position calls for a Senior Research Associate to join a research team at the City College of New York active in basic research as well as in pilot and full scale demonstrations of innovative technologies in the areas of biological nitrogen removal(BNR) and biosolids production.

 

The areas include research as applied to the main wastewater facility flow as well as to the separate centrate treatment train, in resource recovery of energy and nutrient alternatives,

improving stabilization of biosolids and dewatering of sludge to reduce volume while improving cake quality to expand beneficial reuse, struvite control and/or prevention, optimization of biological processes and associated aeration to further improve treatment performance while minimizing both chemical and energy consumption, and address new challenges for disinfecting treated wastewater. 

Other Duties

The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in the ongoing research funded by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

In addition, the candidate is expected to leverage the NYCDEP funding to initiate his/her own research program within the areas of interest stated above and secure funding by responding to solicited and unsolicited proposals.

Since the position will be within an academic environment, interaction and participation of both graduate and undergraduate students should be considered in all of the research projects.

Qualifications

The minimum requirement for this position is an earned PhD in the area of environmental engineering with concentration in biological or physicochemical treatment processes.

Preference will be given to individuals who have further experience in a research capacity either at a University or with a private and/or public entity. 

Experience in the design and operation of municipal treatment facilities as well as a PE license in NYS would further strengthen consideration.
