General Description
The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, the only university-based research unit in the United States specializing in the production and dissemination of knowledge about Dominicans, is seeking to hire a fully bilingual/bi-literate (English and Spanish) researcher with basic familiarity with colonial Dominican and Latin American history and strong skills in paleographic reading and transcribing of sixteenth and seventeenth century Dominican/Hispanic American manuscripts. The hired researcher will work full-time at CUNY DSI’s premises at The City College of New York primarily for the “First Blacks of the Americas” project sponsored by the Institute. The work-period will begin immediately and will end June 30th 2016.
The hired researcher will work under the supervision of and in collaboration with CUNY DSI Assistant Director, Anthony Stevens-Acevedo, in charge of the CUNY DSI First Blacks in the Americas and other Dominican colonial-history related projects of the Institute.
Salary range: Commensurate with experience and academic status as per City University of New York researchers and faculty guidelines. Position includes health benefits + for the duration of the job.
Other Duties
Core duties of the position will be:
1) Searching, identifying, reading and transcribing and/or excerpting and/or summarizing (as determined by CUNY DSI) microfilmed and digital copies of sixteenth-century manuscripts mostly from Archivo General de Indias of Seville written in the various handwriting styles of the period and currently held at CUNY DSI’s Archives;
2) Translating archival documents into English once transcribed;
3) Working on a grant proposal or an academic writing using these transcriptions. If an academic writing, it should be connected to current historical research of CUNY DSI or be related to an academic historical debate relevant to the history of the Americas.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Proven track record of knowledge and at least 10 years of experience on paleographic skills transcribing XVI and XVII century manuscripts of colonial Spanish America;
- Proven track record of knowledge of colonial history of the Americas, the Spanish Caribbean, or the Dominican Republic;
or
- Doctoral degree in colonial Latin American history and experience in Spanish paleography and research skills
- Doctoral degree in any discipline with strong experience in colonial Latin America, Spanish paleography, and research skills
Requirements:
1) Letter stating interest in the position and describing personal qualifications and background (maximum 3 pages, single space, 12-point size);
2) Copy of curriculum vitae indicating work and scholarly experience;
3) Two recommendation letters of former instructors or supervisors or professional colleagues;
4) In situ impromptu paleographic transcription test of two pages of manuscripts from the CUNY DSI colonial La Española manuscripts collection.
