General Description
The Future Now Program at Bronx Community College provides learning opportunities to enrich the academic, social and professional development of youth and young adults. Its main goal is to meet the continuing educational needs for the community. Future Now seeks to improve and develop skills for career opportunities, provide basic skills in preparation for higher education; and enhance the college experiences of young adults. Future Now at Bronx Community College is a funded program that serves out of school youth ages 17 through 24. Future Now provides participants with academic assistance leading to college enrollment and graduation.
Position Description:
The Social Worker will assist Future Now students through many of life's complex challenges, including family abuse, mental illness, disability, and the loss of loved ones. The Social Worker will work with diverse individuals through counseling to help them understand and deal with the difficulties of everyday life.
Position Summary and Essential Functions:
Reporting to the Program Director, the Clinical Social Worker will provide ongoing counseling support, advocacy, and guidance to Future Now program participants to help them address their personal, health, legal, and social service needs, especially those that interfere with their ability to attend classes on a daily basis. The Social Worker will be responsible for working closely with students that have dropped out of school, and/or have recently been released from a criminal justice facility; she/he will create individualized progress plans for each participant and monitor development towards the achievement or lack of achievement of plan. The Social Worker will conduct crisis intervention with all participants as needed.
The Social Worker will exercise substantial discretion and independent judgment in determining how to address program participant needs, as well as advocating on their behalf. She/he will keep the Program Director, Assistant Director, and College Coordinator, apprised of significant decisions made. She/he will work closely with the entire Future Now staff to build the students’ leadership skills.
Other Duties
Responsibilities:
- Assess personal needs of Future Now participants and help find resources to meet their needs.
- Provide individual and group counseling to Future Now participants daily and document assessments in Future Now’s Salesforce Database
- Supervise Future Now mentors.
- Teach Leadership Development classes.
- Advocate with human services, health, court, and criminal justice systems to resolve issues facing Future Now participants.
- Make phone calls and/or home visits, as appropriate, to assess needs and support the students.
- Meet regularly with staff to develop and maintain a consistent approach to supporting and expanding the personal growth and leadership skill of Future Now students.
- Keep service records of contacts with all Future Now students
- Create and maintain relationships with community resources and service providers.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- LCSW preferred, LMSW required.
- At least three years of counseling, job development, or crisis intervention experience with young adults.
- Experience working with youths involved in the criminal justice system as well as knowledge of issues related to reentry.
- Strong commitment to helping young people succeed in a highly effective HSE / College enrollment program to reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills, and enable them to make a difference in their community.
- Demonstrated ability to connect with and be sensitive to persons who are/have been disconnected from school / work.
- Ability to establish rapport and relate sensitively to a multiracial and multicultural group of young people.
- Knowledge of human service, health, court, and criminal justice systems’ programs, regulations, and procedures, and alternative programs.
- Familiarity with Youth Development Institute Principles and Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST) desirable.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills; ability to relate to a wide range of issues, people, and institutions.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent public speaking, listening, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
