General Description

The Baruch STEP Academy is an academic enrichment program focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and providing college preparation. Managed through the CUNY Research Foundation, we serve over 200 middle and high school students throughout the city. The Spring 2023 Program will operate over 12 sessions on Saturdays from January 28th through April 29th.

High School Instructor (In-Person Position)

Course: Introduction to Computer Science

Description: Computer science is the study of the capabilities and limitations of computers. Through computer science education, students develop computational thinking, or the ability to understand how computer science can be applied in all areas of life. Students will learn about computer science as a major and career pathway.

Schedule: Saturdays from 10:35am-12:05pm | 1.5 hours of instruction + 1 hour of prep

 

Summary of Responsibilities

The STEP Academy at Baruch College is seeking to fill a spring IN-PERSON instructor position for the high school program. The course will introduce high school students to an intensive STEM subject for 12 sessions. The goal of the course is to engage students in experiences not provided in a standard classroom and assist students with an end of term project.

Other Duties

  • Plan, teach and prepare materials for 20 students
  • Evaluate student and group performance often
  • Provide staff with measurable results in student learning through assessments
  • Monitor and maintain student attendance records  
  • Reassess curriculum to account for students' needs, interest, and understanding of material 

Qualifications

Required

  • Availability for each scheduled Saturday in the spring- Instruction time: 10:35am-12:05pm.
  • Major in computer science or a strong background in the subject area
  • Prior teaching experience with high school or undergraduate students
  • Demonstrated ability to create an engaging learning environment for students
  • Enthusiasm for the subject and possess good interpersonal skills with teenagers

 Preferred

  • Degree in a related STEM field
  • Ability to engage students with creative lessons and innovative teaching style
  • Possess a strong classroom management style
  • Experience with designing a coding curriculum
