Scheduled & Unscheduled Holidays FAQs

In order to be eligible for scheduled holidays, an employee must be employed Full-time and on the RFCUNY payroll both the day before and the day after the holiday. If an employee is on leave without pay both the day before and the day after a holiday, the employee is not entitled to receive pay for any of those days including the holiday.

The calendar listing the scheduled holidays is set up by RFCUNY annually for the fiscal year (July 1 through June 30). There are usually 13 scheduled holidays each year.

If an employee works on an RFCUNY scheduled holiday due to the project director’s need for the employee’s services, the employee is entitled to both regular pay for the time worked and a substitute day off. The day off may be taken at any time during employment under that RFCUNY project under arrangement with the project director.

In order to be eligible for unscheduled holidays, an employee must be employed Full-time and must have worked for 3 consecutive months prior to the first day of the month of the calendar quarter.

One unscheduled holiday is earned on each of the following dates: July 1, October 1, January 1, and April 1.

Unscheduled holiday details may be accessed through the Time and Leave system under the Time and Leave/View Accruals tab where employees may access their accrued balance, charges, and available balance.

Unscheduled holidays may be used for vacation, personal or family business, religious or other special observance.

Unscheduled holidays must be requested and authorized in advance by an employee’s supervisor.

All unscheduled holidays must be taken during the fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) in which they were earned and before the date of termination or else forfeited.
