Oral historians, journalism students and other scholars will, starting in 2018, be exempt from having to gain approval from institutional review boards (IRB) under certain circumstances. The revised federal guidance for such boards says the following activities are "deemed not to be research: (1) Scholarly and journalistic activities (e.g., oral history, journalism, biography, literary criticism, legal research and historical scholarship), including the collection and use of information that focus directly on the specific individuals about whom the information is collected."
The CUNY Office of Research Administration & Compliance is in the process of evaluating the 500+ page change document to determine how this will affect University policy and what changes may have to be made. For more information from CUNY, go to the CUNY Research Compliance Blog.
