The
New Linkages Project
is a $389,000 international
program funded by the Ford Foundation. Professor
Schaier-Peleg seeks to establish collaboration
between the Further Education and Training Colleges
and the universities in South Africa by facilitating dia-
logue between faculty, administrators, and staff from
each sector within a particular geographical area and
encouraging institution-to-institution collaboration. As
with community colleges, the program serves to cre-
ate opportunities for students—many of whom are
poor and have little education—to move on to higher
education. “Building these collaborative relationships
encourages our global partners to think about pipeline
programs where more students can receive a
Bachelor’s Degree.”

Lecturer, Humanities
LaGuardia Community College
Hugo Fernandez initiated The
Capacity Building for
Undergraduate Study Abroad Program
in order to
develop an effective study abroad model on the com-
munity college level. Through his two-year, $60,000,
US Department of State grant and his existing relation-
ship with partners in Chile, Mr. Fernandez takes twelve
photography and urban studies students of the college
on a four-week excursion to the southern and northern
sections of Chile. His project also includes the devel-
opment of a website that serves as a recruiting tool, a
forum for documenting the trip, and a means for stu-
dents to showcase their work and e-portfolios. “These
types of trips are worthwhile for students and they are
excited to produce their work and share their stories
and adventures.”
